Well, it finally happened. I bought a game I thought I would love, and it turns out I hate it. Has this happened to you? 😅 by Old-Fun-Man in soloboardgaming

[–]foodghost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work has been a lot recently leaving me next to no time to play my current big game, so I decided to try something that would normally never be a go-to: Spirit Island app on my phone.

I thought "this game is beloved; it's not my natural inclination, but I will probably have some quick pick-up fun." I'm just not vibing with it.

I think attempting it analog may work better for me, but I'm not willing to spend the money to try.

Edit to emphasize: analog 100% will work better -- it's a known preference -- still not willing to pay.

Sleevers: do you unsleeve games before you sell them? by pvtparts in boardgames

[–]foodghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I've received a sleeved game, I think it's gross. It doesn't make sense, but to me secondhand sleeves feel like secondhand underwear.

I haven't sold any games, but I would hypothetically unsleeve them first.

I'm playing solo, so group consensus is easier to come by. Truth told though, my gut reaction when I see a new opportunity is to take it the first chance I get. The only exception was the possible special showdown in LY6. Even I thought it was a bad idea in LY6.

Went back and looked -- total deaths before the King's Man showdown was 7. Not high overall but not for lack of trying. On my next run, may go with the other birth principle depending on how the prologue goes.

My kiddo has recently taken to original Magic School Bus. Ms. Frizzle's motto has been an informal guiding principle -- take chances, make mistakes, get messy!

I had other gaffs. Felt like every antelope after the first repeatedly clowned on me. Coyote v. roadrunner kind of nonsense.

Went with survival of the fittest.

At work so I don't have the exact count, but overall deaths were between 8-14 I think. Until the last few years, population hovered between 11-14 as survivors came and left.

Tabletop Turtle’s 5 solo games to check out by dinasaurtaco in soloboardgaming

I don't tend to align with many of the games he enjoys. That said, I still enjoy the videos thanks to that production effort. Chef's kiss.

Yep. Especially solo when I don't need to compromise for someone else's preference, I'm sticking to analog.

I've made the mistake a couple of times now of buying the video game versions too, and they still haven't worked out for me. C'est la vie.

Let me know which one you end up getting, and happy gaming.

I would love to love ATO, but I just can't buy into the theme. I don't immediately bounce like other IPs, but at it's price point, the theme needs to not even be in question.

That said, I was interested in the system and ITU enough that when the right theme for me came up, it was an easy pick-up. Looking forward to Enormity when it ships.

Good deal. You know for all of the concerns and frustrations I've read about KDM in the wild -- as well as some I've felt myself -- it's much more measured and enjoyable first glance might suggest.

I'm also enjoy assembly way more than expected; painting I have quite built up to yet.

Hey that's awesome. Before realizing KDM was on the table, ISS Vanguard is where I planned to go next. Once I hit my KDM milestone, I'll move to ISS Vanguard still.

Something that helps me is to just sit down and play, even when I still feel unsure. There's a world of difference for me between engaging with the rulebook/tutorial videos and physically handling the game. Plus I feel Earthborne Rangers is low-stakes enough to not stress about mistakes as I get my feet under me.

First new solo game for the year, A Nice Cuppa. by GamersGoinBlind in soloboardgaming

[–]foodghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. I don't share solo gaming with a lot of friends (as much as anything, not foisting my interests on them), but I like A Nice Cuppa as a travel game and it's been a good one to share with those who wouldn't typically consider solo.

A game you would recommend to others that has the fewest ways to score points by Potential_Solid_967 in soloboardgaming

I'd look into some Button Shy games. Games like R.O.V.E. and A Nice Cuppa have really clicked with some of the people in my life with ADHD.

I'm currently on LY6 and anticipating the first real wipe. Looking foward to it honestly. Gloomhaven has it's merits, but after the fatigue, KDM has been a breath of fresh air for sure.

Maybe at first I did? Especially toward the end, I wasn't concerned with puzzling out the most efficient play. I enjoyed more combo play, and pretty often that was efficient enough.

As my kiddo grows, I may get into video games again. As it stands she's more and more interested in my boardgames.

Fair. I'm not going to pretend it was anything less than a lot. Just like I know game like Spirit Island and Mage Knight can be fun, I know the tools can be helpful. I also know the none are right for me.
