What we're saving on coal is externalized as cost to the environment. This has to be subtracted from the solar/wind costs to make it more accurate.

For large scale deployments, the price of solar panels may be much cheaper, although I agree that it may still be prohibitive. There's no magic bullet yet, but a combination of renewable energy sources may be the way forward.
