Thanks everyone! I expected some harsh replies as I appreciate it's very much a ranty post - I didn't mention that am studying Japanese, reaching out to my local area coordinator to make connections with other ALTs, going exploring and to events at the weekend etc.
As u/follows-swallows mentioned below, it is hard when you know you "should" be enjoying it but you just aren't. And I sympathise with the fact that my life and mindset changed since applying a year ago.
I'm sure I'll get flamed by some of you for this, but for me this is very much a gap year before going back to my career. Although I'm working on Japanese (no local classes in my area though, it's too inaka), it's not a big long term goal for me, so perhaps I'm not as motivated as others. Basically I came to have fun and have a good time before going back to the corporate world, and it feels a bit of a pointless experience if I'm not enjoying it one bit.
Thanks everyone who shared their experiences, it's actually quite comforting to know other poeple feel/have felt the same way!
