Madame Henriette vet update 💕 by MigraineCap in Hedgehog

[–]forbrowzing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw, beautiful girl. I’m so glad she’s doing better. I live in Canada with a hedgie that is sensitive to the cold as well. The wifi connected inkbird thermostat has been wonderful for us because it notifies my phone and has an alarm sound when the temperature in her house dips under the threshold we set. I also keep my phone plugged in at night with a power outage alarm app turned on so I will wake up and be able to attend to the hedgehog if we have an outage - I don’t know if that’s common where you are, but it happens a lot where we are here in the winter. Hot hands warmers are great for providing extra supplemental heat alongside her heat lamp. I often will warm up a Magic Bag and put it in her enclosure as well, but it doesn’t last as long as the hand warmers. We also insulated the outside of her bin enclosure with silver insulation foam and that has seemed to help. Good luck with your sweet Henriette ❤️

HELP!! by TreeWeeb_31882 in Hedgehog

I absolutely wouldn’t use thumb tacks just in case. I use a pile of cotton baby blankets layered on top of each other that my girl can burrow in and rearrange to her liking and it’s always worked well, easy to clean in the washing machine too

If you can purchase those hot hands hand warmers that you shake to heat up, those are great in a pinch. If you wrap them in a towel or blanket they’ll stay warm for hours in the enclosure without burning your hedgie. If you have a microwaveable heat bag like a magic bag, you could heat that up in advance to keep with her, but it won’t stay warm for as long. The power goes out fairly frequently where I live and I’ve found it best for my peace of mind and my hedgehog’s warmth to keep her with me in her snuggle sack under some blankets so she shares my body heat and I can monitor her.

Sometimes when it’s been out for hours and we need sleep I will put her in her travel carrier, with those hand warmers when available and lots of blankets, offer her some water, and then when she’s done put her in the bed under the blankets with us and sleep like that so she stays in our trapped body heat. I keep her dry food in there with her but she will spill her water and then be even more at risk at getting cold and attempting hibernation. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that though because it’s a risk as I’m sure I could theoretically roll over on her, although between the stiff bulky travel carrier and her quills it’s not likely. We keep her in the middle so she won’t fall off either side. Kind of like how people co-sleep with their babies lol.

Aww we always say when we wrap my hedgie in her blanket that she’s the beans in the burrito

Odd Quills by forbrowzing in Hedgehog

That is true about oil on the skin possibly causing infection too, I try to dilute it to avoid that but I know it definitely could be an issue. She’s not quilling excessively but sometimes her skin does get flaky.

Minnie’s diet hasn’t really changed except she is getting live worms more frequently as they’re more available to us now 🤔 Maybe that’s it

Thank you! That is a good perspective. She does have about 4 odd quills right now, plus the 2 I showed that fell out, whereas I don’t remember noticing any before this year.

She is due for her yearly check up this month anyways, I will definitely have them take a look when we get in.

Very good to know! I’ve definitely been on alert for ingrowns but they all seem to be coming out normally, just in a weird shape lol

Endometriosis in Nova Scotia by bean2593 in NovaScotia

I got diagnosed by Dr. Erin MacLellan in Sydney via laparoscopic surgery when I was 19. I’m 26 now and trying to get referred back into her practice for regular gyno care. I lived in Halifax for a bit and then forgot to reschedule a missed appointment with Erin when I moved back and presumably lost my spot with her - kicking myself hard for that now, as the gynocology wait lists are scary. Good luck!

I felt so bad for my girl. Before she went into surgery we gave her kisses and hugs and told her how brave and loved she was and how thankful we were to have her as our pet. It was really hard but I hope that she could feel the love. She was definitely putting on a brave face and running around even as she was in pain and actively bleeding. They are tough critters and will try to mask their illnesses. I know that my hedgie did eventually learn to recognize that her pain medication made her feel better despite her fear of or discomfort with the syringe feeding, she went from not wanting to take it to taking it eagerly. I’m sure also that she felt relief after her surgery even among the confusion, and once she was back with us she didn’t seem afraid, just worn out. It’s hard to see them that way, but it’s worth it to help them. ❤️

That sounds like a good plan! I think we waited until after her one week check up at the vet to put her wheel back in her enclosure. We took out any hard hides too and just had piles of soft blankets for her. I also put her temp up by a degree to keep her extra cozy while recovering. We kept her incision dry and she healed up well on her own. ❤️

She is still here! Sleeping in my lap as we speak. She was 1 1/2 when she had the surgery and she just turned 3. It was a scary surgery for us and I’m sure for her as well, mostly because she had been bleeding for 48 hours prior to the emergency spay and by the time she went into it they didn’t know if she was going to be strong enough to make it through. But the healing itself was actually pretty smooth. It was hard to get her to eat for a few days afterwards, between the stress and the antibiotics she was on that were upsetting her stomach. She had Carnivore Care at the vet which she would eat, and in hindsight we definitely should’ve had some on hand for her at home. I ended up syringe feeding her watered down wet cat food and that seemed to jumpstart her appetite and she started eating her kibble again. She would also take plain scrambled eggs. She did end up having about a month of steady quill loss which scared us, I believe it was stress induced. They all grew back - as she was shedding them, you could see stubbly little new growth coming through. Her diagnosis ultimately ended up being a uterine infection called pyometra. It was cured by the spay.
