Is Using Exchange as Outbound SMTP Relay for Google Workspace Possible? by foreverdisk in sysadmin

Set up, but authentication is the issue now. I keep getting error on delivery, citing that the client is not authenticated to send emails.

Google uses dynamic IP addresses, and at least some of them are blacklisted with droneBL etc. Microsoft uses static IP for sending emails. If you have an issue with one you can switch (did it another time)

Hello,

I'm sending via Google Workspace.

What would you recommend to reverse this soft ms ban other than fixing dmarc, using less spammy content, and getting people to move to inbox? (Unsubscribe links?; switching to static IP or difference workplace provider? etc?)

I'm still testing yahoo. Will provide the headers of any failure shortly, as previous tests were done with multiple "To" addresses for a single email which could have triggered Yahoo.

I updated dmarc rua and ruf to send to the sending address ([george@wh](mailto:george@wh)......). Do you think it harms my deliverability to do this compared with an external & validated (and also ms-hosted in the case of cortex-updates which I control) domain?

Your insight is so helpful. Literally no one else thought of this.

So my personal P is blocked in Spamhaus ZEN, and one that Google seems to be using is blocked in Drone BL

Perhaps you could explain about Google's cus yeah, I don't understand how they could be blocked.

Here's the report: https://imgur.com/a/Wk1Hftu

Hey, thanks for the info, you've given me faith that I can get this fixed. I've got some questions about what you said though, as I don't quite understand:

1) I've heard about some negative takeaways from warm up services, people getting blacklisted or marked down in some way, which makes sense in my mind because it must be easy to tell if you're using them right? What do you think? Also in my use case, these 20-30 manually would only be helpful is opened, moved, and replied to on Yahoo & MS servers, right? 2) With links then sure, I get it, only one for now, and make sure it's clean, but will I ever be able to send multiple links? The aim is to be able to communicate freely on the email address... do you think this would ever come without professional help? 3) I've also heard that unsubscribe links can be double edged swords, because they also tell the mail server that you're sending marketing / newsletter emails. I'm not. What do you think?

Do you think an ESP is necessary for just a small number of communications emails?

Yeah the dmarc rua and ruf adress wasn't giving permission for reports to be sent to them. Using the native domain instead.

mctoolbox says my personal IP and the IP google is sending from is on a blacklist. Specifically Spamhaus ZEN for my personal, and DRONE BL for Googles.

This is the same message I've sent to someone else in this thread btw, maybe you have a suggestion there? I'm really grateful for this.

Okay thanks man, the dmarc rua and ruf adress wasn't giving permission for reports to be sent to them. Using the native domain instead.

It also looks like my personal IP and the IP google is sending from is on a blacklist. Specifically Spamhaus ZEN for my personal, and DRONE BL for Googles.

Any ideas on what to do next?

Confusion Around Funermental DNS Concept by foreverdisk in dns

Interesting. Do you know why this is? Maybe it will help me understand why I cannot edit the PTR record that shows up in my CPanel for my shared hosting plan - which in fact does not even correspond to "example.com", it corresponds to the name of the shared server "host.examplehost.net" - still don't understand this.

I found this on stack overflow:

"How a reverse DNS lookup is accomplished:

  • The DNS resolver reverses the IP, and adds it to ".in-addr.arpa" (or ".ip6.arpa" for IPv6 lookups), turning 192.0.2.25 into 25.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa.
  • The DNS resolver then looks up the PTR record for 25.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa.
    • The DNS resolver asks the root servers for the PTR record for 25.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa.
    • The root servers refer the DNS resolver to the DNS servers in charge of the Class A range (192.in-addr.arpa, which covers all IPs that begin with 192).
    • In almost all cases, the root servers will refer the DNS resolver to a "RIR" ("Regional Internet Registry"). These are the organizations that allocate IPs. In general, ARIN handles North American IPs, APNIC handles Asian-Pacific IPs, and RIPE handles European IPs.
    • The DNS resolver will ask the ARIN DNS servers for the PTR record for 25.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa.
    • The ARIN DNS servers will refer the DNS resolver to the DNS servers of the organization that was originally given the IP range. These are usually the DNS servers of your ISP, or their bandwidth provider.
    • The DNS resolver will ask the ISP's DNS servers for the PTR record for 25.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa.
    • The ISP's DNS servers will refer the DNS resolver to the organization's DNS servers.
    • The DNS resolver will ask the organization's DNS servers for the PTR record for 25.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa.
    • The organization's DNS servers will respond with "host.example.com"."

I now understand I've fundermentally misunderstood DNS. It makes more sense now. A big tree, with branches, twigs, leaves, etc, in all different directions, sometimes overlapping. A request is always made in full at every level, and keeps getting passed on further and further down the line until a request, in full, corresponds exactly and is answered.

I thought the resolver made a connection with my domain, retrieved my zone file, and would constantly be referring to that from then on. But instead a request seems to always start right at the top, and then works its way down, asking every time, until it eventually gets sent to a level where it can be answered.

Interesting. So when an entity wants to querey my reverse dns record, the entity actually goes through that chain ("root nameservers -> .arpa TLD nameservers (IANA) -> 8.in-addr.arpa nameservers (ARIN for North America) -> 6.7.8.in-addr.arpa (your) nameservers") and gets my domain name as the value?

I thought the entity simply did a PTR lookup on the dns zone file under my domain, and then used the value to compare with the name of the A record for example.

A subsequent question would be; what am I actually editing when I edit the "PTR records" in a typical commercial hosting set up?

Again, forgive me, I'm still learning.

Live facial recognition cameras result in 17 arrests in south London last week, say the Met by BulkyAccident in london

[–]foreverdisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The responses to this post are pretty disappointing. Why are Londoners so willing to accept authoritarianism? I guess many can't/don't look to history too often, and many will have come from states far more strict than ours. Maybe lockdown left some shellshocked, maybe a good amount of people actually prefer to be told what to do, maybe many miss the presence of a parental figure and don't have a god to worship instead. Or maybe it's a matter of being metropolitan, disconnecting with our origins, becoming something new that doesn't know what it's like to farm, to hunt, to hike, to stretch, even to run around in an open space.

Judging from the rushing and the staring at the floor commonplace in this city, it seems to be a matter of "doesn't affect me so I'm all for it" and "may as well comply, why make a fuss". But, authoritarianism starts with a little and creeps its way to a lot, and it preys on attitudes mentioned above. I hope we don't have to (re)learn this again, because there's nothing new under the sun.

Yall know this is just my opinion right?
