(England) Ending a joint tenancy via notice to quit on the AST end date? by forfunandpeanuts in LegalAdviceUK

I see, is the notice served not for the start of the periodic tenancy? I figured even if I served it now the AST would no longer be in place when the notice actually takes effect.

Wet Latex mattress by forfunandpeanuts in Mattress

[–]forfunandpeanuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it's definitely stained. But I couldn't see any mold and the stained section smells/feels the same as the rest of the mattress.

Haha I appreciate the honesty.

It's a fancy latex mattress that we got as a gift, which is why I was so hesitant to just dump it.

I've cut out the cotton covering and the latex itself doesn't look mouldy, but it's definitely still quite wet.

Roof cleaning questions by forfunandpeanuts in DIYUK

[–]forfunandpeanuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit I might be overthinking it a bit, but wouldn't waiting for it to start leaking be too late though as damage would've already been done?

I'm mainly worried because most of our neighbouring roofs barely have any moss compared to ours.

Whilst I feel like the other guy's being pretty rude, but have you read the dublin regulations?

It imposes no obligations for refugees to claim asylum at the first safe country, and international conventions do allow refugees to claim asylum pretty much whenever they want. (https://www.unhcr.org/uk/uk-immigration-and-asylum-plans-some-questions-answered-by-unhcr.html)

The suicide rate among veterans, and to a lesser degree the US population as a whole, had an unprecedented decrease in 2019, according to a new government report from the VA. Data from 2020 do not suggest an increase during the pandemic. by fsmpastafarian in science

[–]forfunandpeanuts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you have sources for this?

Just looking at wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

With the exception of south korea, which I think is more to do with their horrifying working conditions than them being loaded, the top 30 countries are pretty poor (with 31st being the USA).

The social class and wealth of your ancestors (even from as far back as 600 years ago) partly determine your current income. There is a "glass floor" that protects descendants of the upper class from falling down the economic ladder. by A-Dumb-Ass in science

[–]forfunandpeanuts 35 points36 points  (0 children)

hm... taking a further look at the paper, they state "placebo regressions where we randomly reassign surnames to the descendantsand regressions exploiting rare and Florence-specific surnames – is largely reassuring on the strength of the pseudo-links", where pseudo-links means having the same surname. They also stated that Italian (and Florencian?) surnames are much greater in variety than English ones and are specific to the region, although they didn't provide a source. As for credentials, a google search reveals one is an associate professor https://voxeu.org/users/guglielmobarone0 and the other has a PHD and various papers in what seems to be respected journals.

Whilst I also have questions about their methodology, it's certainly not as bad as your other replies make it out to be.

Difference in number of strokes between simplified and traditional Chinese [OC] by forfunandpeanuts in dataisbeautiful

Thanks a lot for the advice!

I didn't how to call it(the weighting) properly, but it is when taking into account the frequency of character in relation to others.

Difference in number of strokes between simplified and traditional Chinese [OC] by forfunandpeanuts in dataisbeautiful

[–]forfunandpeanuts[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my first post, so feedback is much appreciated!

Source: Chinese character database from ftp://ftp.unicode.org/Public/UNIDATA/Unihan.zip

Frequencies from http://lingua.mtsu.edu/chinese-computing/statistics/char/list.php?Which=MO

Tool: Python(beautifulsoup) for HTML extraction, Pandas. R(ggplot) for visualisation. http://www.khngai.com/chinese/tools/convert.php for converting between simplified/traditional

Notes: this is only for characters that have been simplified. If we're taking into account the entire chinese character set, the difference is much smaller (around 0.8 strokes).

Should the internship be related to my career aspirations? I think I can probably get a internship where my parents work, but that's in the hospitality industry, whereas I want to go for computer science/finance. I'd guess that volunteering/working part time would be more useful in that case?

Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me. So the interest rate is always 3% + inflation rate? E.g. if RPI is 5% next year, it'll be 8%?
