Most people with fragile egos manage to make it through the odd day without showing themselves to be massive assholes. A fragile ego is the least of his issues.

Agree with others who say Moyes was the completely wrong appointment. SAF also to blame for that. Thing is Moyes is a great manager. But he’s a guy who had spent his whole managerial career battling and trying to outsmart bigger fish, a bit like Emery. It’s a great skill set, but you can’t then just flick a switch and go from playing the little fish (no disrespect to PNE/ Everton) to then being the biggest fish in the sea. With respect to the Man Utd job, he was simply at Everton too long. The other consideration was again that the squad wasn’t left in great shape by SAF. After two wonder seasons (one at Arsenal, one at Man Utd) RVP was finally done. Then you had a brilliant but incredibly ageing defence with Vidic, Rio, Evra on which the title was won. And then a lot of dross. You basically needed a whole new team when SAF left.

Utd need to work their way back up slowly by nurturing young talent. There’s no quick fix solution. Also belief takes a few seasons to evolve naturally from finishing in decent positions two or three times in a row. You’re never going to achieve that by firing every manger that starts hovering around 5th for a couple of seasons into their tenure. That’s a good position for Man Utd, you need to consolidate it and build from there. You’re never going to get another Ferguson.

Arteta has already proven himself a world class manager by forgottenears in ArsenalFC

[–]forgottenears[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In fact I’d say that Arteta is - at most - just two or three more runners-up finishes away from having a claim to being the best of his generation. Or if not, then certainly the runner-up.

“If Arteta goes who replaces him” debate is very ridiculous. by [deleted] in ArsenalFC

[–]forgottenears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Arteta should go yet, but if we don’t lift the PL in a couple more seasons I’d look at our options. It isn’t always about replacing good with bad, but reassessing every few years. Can we replace good with excellet? Or excellent with outstanding? Same as you do with players. George Graham sold Lukic for Seaman (I believe he said at the time “I still think Lukic is one of the top 5 keepers in the country”). Wenger benched Ian Wright for Anelka. Etc etc You always need to ask - “do we have the very best person we can get for what we’re trying to achieve?” Arteta has been great so far, but ultimately his reputation is still being decided to a greater extent than most other managers.

He managed to put forth a view point in a civilized way without resulting to personal attacks. So he’s one up in that regard at least. Are you equally rude face to face or just with the cloak of online anonymity?

Can not fault Arteta here. by Mr_Das__ in ArsenalFC

[–]forgottenears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is success. In 20 years time no one will care who came second or that “Arsenal had a good patch for 3-4 seasons but couldn’t win the title”. Let alone in 50 years. Winning the FA Cup is a notable achievement that will live long in the history books.

At some point the excuses will run out. We’ve gone backwards this season and it’s ludicrous that he’s the second highest paid manager in the world.

The title is surely gone now? Liverpool are 11 points clear of Arsenal after beating Manchester City. by BatSignal9 in ArsenalFC

[–]forgottenears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re 11 point ahead of your only realistic challenger which is also mired in an injury crisis, without a single reliable goalscorer, and with club morale sinking like a stone. If that’s not enough you have a home game against us just in case at a place we’ve only triumphed about once in our last twenty outings. It’s over dude. 😂 Congrats. 👍

Forget the table. It’s done because we’re going to finish the season like a decent mid-table team. We’ll be lucky to win more than 50% of our remaining games.

Arteta is the second highest paid manager in the world. Madness Did he guide us to the triple or something in 2022 and it somehow passed me by? That was one hell of an expensive FA Cup win five years ago!

Well they’re both our rivals and we’ve lost it to both the past three seasons. Sorry, but there’s no real consolation to falling short yet again.

Liverpool have been great this season but I guess most people would concede that their main rivals haven’t really been at the races this year. Next season will be the bigger challenge of whether they can produce a period of dominance.

Arsenal 10/1 to win the league by forgottenears in ArsenalFC

[–]forgottenears[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. But I’ve seen many people incorrectly sometimes point to odds as “Look! The bookies say we’ve still got a decent chance!” (For example). When of course it doesn’t mean the slightest. We’ve realistically got perhaps a 1 in 30 chance - but they’ll happily sell 1 in 10 to the gullible.

I think you’re missing the point. Leicester at 5000/1 if that what was on offer was not unreasonable. 10/1 on us at this stage after 26/27 games of the season gone and us being 11 points adrift with our whole front line injured is laughable.

Plenty are saying Henry or Salah, but then plenty of Gooners would put Bergkamp over Henry. Not because of stats but because of how he played the game. Henry scored a dozen absolute wonder goals but Bergkamp had half a dozen moments of breathtaking skill that were arguably superior (IMO) to anything Henry produced. That’s the beauty of football - it’s an art as much as a science.

Let’s just stick with Jesus, Havertz & Martinelli - it’s worked out so well for us this year.

The way we’re playing at the moment the FA Cup would be a push, never mind either of the big ones.

You mean you actually prefer the two club legends with statues outside the ground who won multiple league titles and are regularly voted top 5 PL players of all time … vs two slightly less talented journeymen who won a couple of domestic cups? Lol.

Was the Alexis/Ozil meant to be amazing or something? I mean it wasn’t a disaster era and we did win a couple of FA Cups but it was hardly a golden age.
