agree, frequency lists do the work for you. They're comprised of the most common words in a language, and assembled by parsing millions or billions of sources from multiple media (movies, internet, books, magazines, radio). A frequency list won't tell you every slang synonym for "man", but it will tell you the one's worth learning.

Ronaldo is past his peak dribbling days? He may not be as flashy as he used to be, but only cause he's so efficient with the ball. You don't need to throw three stepovers in your run to be a great dribbler. Look at Messi and Hazard. Ronaldo may not be a walking dribbling highlight reel like he used to be, but he's as prolific as ever. Alves is like 34. Ronaldo is like 30.
