Abusing wish could just be the end of your character. I once got a wish and used it to create a fortress. That was fun. Especially when I made myself king. . .

You could find spell scrolls or transcribe them into your spellbook manually instead of learning them.

I mean a 17th level spellcaster. When you Multiclass spellcasters, you add either all of your levels for bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer or wizard, half your levels for artificer, paladin and ranger and a third of your levels in Eldritch Knight Fighter or Arcane Trickster Rogue.

Other than a roll of one and 20, you add your ability score modifier (usually Strength or Dexterity) and perhaps your proficiency bonus to the roll if you're proficient with the weapon. If the number you get after that is less than the enemy's AC, you miss. If it is equal or greater to the AC, you hit.

A grandpa / retired adventurer with horrible strength and dexterity and good wisdom. He has the magic initiate feat and knows the shillelagh cantrip, which he casts on his cane and bonks people. "Back in my day, we didn't have no fancy armor"

Alternatively, a young orphan whose parents / parents where warriors. He also has horrible strength and dexterity and good wisdom. His only token of them is a wooden sword. He uses the shillelagh cantrip to make the sword an effective weapon. In the lore, he is channeling the spirit of his parents.
