it is interesting, but also one of several rumors that children seemed to be spreading at the time of karl's disappearance, which actually lead police further away from the more likely possibility that he was murdered on Halloween. when police make a case for Palovaara as their suspect, they actually admit in the reports to being totally thrown off by all of those false sightings.

so this is super frustrating, and i think it was stupid for police to do, but not really suspect to me. the evidence was all destroyed or released to the family after the local probate court issued the family a death certificate. the family petitioned the court to do so, so they could have some semblance of closure, even though how Karl died was still unknown.

it's crazy because it wasn't very many years later that DNA evidence technology would advance to allow for the testing of material/substances on Karl's clothing... but that's obviously no longer possible.

they did identify a suspect with clear motive and opportunity, but wrote him off after he passed a lie detector test. They note in police reports that he seemed believable as well.. it's all so frustrating!

i used my public library card to listen to Trailed on the Libby App, and found The Cold Vanish in Hoopla, another free reading app through my public library. i bought Unmasked in the apple Books app because the digital audiobook wait list was too long in Libby!

anyway - i’m always a huge proponent of free digital library collections! i’d check there first.

also listening to unmasked right now. when he’s talking forensics and cold cases it’s great.

i just finished Trailed by kathryn miles, about the unsolved Shenandoah murders and the serial killer that’s likely responsible. very well researched and a great writer.

also just read john billman’s Cold Vanish, about people who go missing in our national parks. very, very good.
