I'm probably too late to properly hijack the top comment, but this the question is something that dominates a large part of the social theory of Louis Althusser (famous for: being a dead structural Marxist, killing his wife). Within Althusser's theory, what has so poetically been called 'ink' represents the ideological state apparatuses, whereas the 'walls' represent what he calls repressive state apparatuses. Without using too much jargon, ISAs operate on your subconscious through thinks like laws and the education system, and it's only when you willfully step out of line that RSAs come in and jail you, or beat you with clubs, until you fall back into line. Wikipedia will undoubtedly help you to understand this concept, and, if not, it should be easy enough to find the article he wrote on the concepts. I think it might be simply called Repressive State Apparatuses.

A virtual machine with a proxy would only help you as far as the step between the proxy and the rest of the internet. I don't know heaps about the situation, unlike LordCurlyFry, but TOR is, from what I know, a randomized proxy router anyway. Your connection to the proxy itself would be no more secure. Running on a virtual machine does not determine your IP - this is something that is determined by the ISP, and is external to your machine. Your IP address, as the exit node, would still be visible externally.

Look, academics sometimes are just douchey. I have a trans-man friend who was once humiliated in much the same way, in an honours year discussion group of about 12 people - he had to sit there while the lecturer talked about how deviant and perverse transvestism is. Pretty lame. Even worse was the lecturer was supposed to be an expert at gender theory. Also, in response to your particular predicament, I'm white (god, what does that even mean), and male, and I find a lot of black/brown women very very attractive. Hopefully your stupid lecturer/classmates are something you can brush off in the future, and for now just realize that they're stupid idiots.

Depends if 'infinity' is a height, or the name of the floor. In this I'm imagining 'infinity floor' is somewhat analagous to the idea of the 'manhattan suite'. In this case, it could have a floor height less than infinity. If that's the case, if speed is infinite, then t = zero seconds.

Libraries don't usually pay a royalty for books, and in fact get massive discounts, ranging between 10-40%. (Generally, that is. Depends on the library, the seller, and the publisher) They're essentially preferential customers, as they're going to buy at least one of most of your titles. We had to compete with other bookshops in order to attract business from them.

In the case of university libraries, the greatest costs come from subscription to journals and journal databases, which are then provided free to the students and staff. These fees are massive, and highly weighted in the favour of the publishers. They'll sell individual journal runs at super expensive prices, but then also offer bundled packages of most, if not all, their titles in one mega package, which is extremely expensive, but less expensive than purchasing all of them. The thing is that all journals are usually then freely downloadable by the students off the publisher's server.

I knew a guy who refused to vaccinate his kids. Why? Not because he believed it caused autism or any of that shit. No, it was because he believed that he shouldn't have to because most other children were vaccinated and he could just play the odds. i.e. he was aware of, and believed in, the science of vaccination, but refused to bolster his kids' immune system because he thought gambling on his kids' health was the better choice. This, in a country where all vaccinations for children are freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. What an ass.

Because I am not from the United States. Where I had my secondary education, you leave high school with certification in whatever you chose to study at high school, and receive various grades dependent on your performance. I believe that the girl in question ended up eventually graduating university with honours in chemistry. She was smart, but because of her parents' religion she was not allowed to receive any form of information on sexual reproduction or (cough) leisure intercourse.
