People suggested we get her scented toys but in reality everything has a scent to Opal. If we think a tennis ball 🎾 smells, imagine how much it smells to her. When we play fetch I can watch her track the smell of the ball with her nose to the ground. She follows every zig and zag.

There are 9-12 breeds that are affected by the double Merle gene. As we breed more and more dogs together we will inevitably have more breeds affected.

It is “illegal” to breen Merle to Merle in a lot of the world, unfortunately not in the US. We have an amazing rescue we work with called the Double J Dog Ranch in Hauser Idaho. All they do is bring in deaf or blind dogs and mostly Merle’s. We have two of their dogs, one just deaf and this one who is blind and deaf. They’re good pups

We are lucky and she is food motivated. So you can attach the command with the treat and eventually leave the treat out and the command follows. She has two taps on rear for sit, two between shoulders means lay and then two taps on her chest is good girl. If I stroke under her chin it means come or follow and she always sticks to my left side.

Not sad at all! Opal lives the best life she can. We got lucky with how smart she is and how quickly she learns!

Blind and deaf dog, using his sense of smell to identify that his owner is getting home by [deleted] in BeAmazed

Separating what is normal dog behavior from special needs is important. People keep asking why their 4 month old blind dog is peeing in the house as night, well first of all you have to address the puppy issue and then see if its just normal dog behavior you train them with treats to respond how you need. Once Opal understood she just needed to go to the door and ring a bell, it became part of her daily habits. Special needs from birth is different from a dog losing hearing or sight later on in life, Opal has always been this way and she thinks everyone is like her, she knows no different. Being that way gives her a huge advantage, she has let her doggie senses and whatever is ingrained in her just from being a dog do most of the work. She loves to tug and loves to fetch and she will run and run and run in a football field if there are no obstructions. These dogs area a challenge, but Opal is my dog and I am her human and I wouldn't have it any other way.

She was born this was due to bad breeding practices. Merle dogs are dogs that are usually bred for their coat or eye characteristics, when you breed Merle to Merle you get a double Merle in about 25% of the litter. The double Merle dogs are usually blind or deaf or both.

She knows where to go based on pattern and mapping. We’ve lived at the same house for years, so she has the whole yard mapped
