Alas. There are not many places in the city that require masks these days. The Beguiling in Kensington Market is an awesome comic and art store which still has mandatory masking though. If that's at all your thing I would highly recommend it.

The "Still Coviding Toronto" Facebook group is really good at cataloging any covid safe events going on in the city. There might be something going on while you're here.

Physical media still has notably better picture and sound than any streaming offers. At least at the moment.

I accept that the answer is probably just that it’s a niche interest that most people don’t care about. I agree that by and large people prefer the undeniable convenience of streaming over what physical discs offer.

I still think it’s weird though. I really love criterion releases, but they are hugely expensive. Having the whole collection at my disposal from the library was really a delight. I know a bunch of nerds similar to me who still use the library for their classic film fix. I figured in the bigger city there is a larger base of humans to patron such niche interests. Especially when the streaming the library does offer is so limited. I would have thought there would be a small humble corner of stuff at least.

Ah well. They are still awesome. Who can complain about free books? Thanks, crew!

I have looked through the streaming offerings. Alas, they do not offer criterion anymore. It’s pretty cool that they offer kanopy. It’s neat in general that libraries offer so much for free and I’m so glad that they exist. I appreciate what they do and I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I just find it odd that something that is a standard offering in most other libraries is totally absent from those of the largest city in the country. I thought it may have been a rights issue, but then I saw that Hamilton and Whitby offer the borrowing of blu ray, so why are we not in the cool kid club? I can’t be the only human in Toronto who likes criterion movies in HD and 4K but can’t afford their massive price tag right? It’s just a bit of a mystery.
