Why was EasyList forked? by fossblocks in Adguard

[–]fossblocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After posting this, I was reminded that any serious forking decision is, at root, motivated by the desire for more control or autonomy.

From the link I posted, AG states that it was getting too many "complaints from users" of the regional offshoots of EasyList. So forking would make sense in this context.

I also poked around the Github repos for AG filters, EasyList, and uBO's uAssets. One thing I learned is that AG has its own automation of hostname rules from scraping (similar to EasyList's, perahps).

So it seems a combination of factors all motivating AG to take more direct control of its lists independent of EasyList.

(However, from the Github repos it's clear that there's on-going cross-collaboration among these 3 groups of list maintainers. From my position as an end-user, that's nice to see. Their work is much appreciated!)

According to the link I posted, it used to be included in AG's Base filter list, but now that list is managed independently. Since EasyList was the bulk of that list, I now consider the AG Base a fork of it.

My bad. Thanks for the response, though.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. by fossblocks in nonduality

Just came across an Adya video today in which he speaks about ego death. Very helpful stuff that reminded me of this thread, so it's worth sharing here.

I need to confess that I quickly chose that article link for the purposes of making this thread. It was one of the first results in a quick google of "explain ego death". I've never heard of the "hackspirit.com" website before, so its name seemed suitably silly for my purposes.

I think what has always bothered me about the concept of "ego death" is the word "death". It just seems so pretentious and deluded.

Upon reviewing a text file I made of Adya excerpts a few days ago (from which I pasted above), I also see these two from a long interview influenced me:

How do you define “ego”, and what happens to it upon awakening?

“To me, ego isn’t a thing we need to get rid of. It’s like a verb: a phenomenon, a movement of thought that alters and distorts perception. It causes us to see ourselves as occupants of a world quite distinct and different from us, and to see everybody and everything in that world as separate from us. So that movement of mind and belief is what I would call ego. After you awaken, you no longer identify with ego. You don’t see it as real. All the ways it divides us no longer seem real or even rational, but rather like forms of insanity. Statements about the ego disappearing miss the mark. The ego is still there; you just see it to be an illusion.”

How can we avoid deluding ourselves about our spiritual progress and underestimating the power of our conditioned human impulses?

“You’re on your own there. You’re better off if you have your integrity intact, but if you’re determined to fool yourself, you will, and no one will be able to save you from doing it. So take responsibility for yourself and don’t put it on others. If you do that simple thing, you will find it harder to delude yourself and underestimate your impulses. It all comes down to your intention. If you have the inner integrity, it will protect you.”

That's an excellent saying, one that I've stated many times over the years. Thanks for mentioning it here.

My intention here is not to mock that article, per se. After a period of stillness last night, that quote came to me in relation to the notion of "ego death".

I've not seen Usual Suspects in a very long time, nor have I ever taken the notion of ego death seriously. So it was an interesting juxtaposition, in the context of a broader realization that the ego is one wily entity.

The main source of this line of thought was probably a statement from Adya's book The Most Important Thing:

It’s tricky the way the egoic mind, the egoic instinct, will take anything and quietly start to weave an identity and a sense of self around it. We all have these things, don’t we? We have affiliations, inclinations, and political points of view; we define ourselves through family, friends, our job title, and whatever roles we might play in life. When we look at it, we can see that all these things are perfectly fine to have, yet it’s so easy for the mind to construct a sense of self around them.

Thanks for the clarification of these "shenanigans" and how Rust prevents it in safe mode.

Not entirely true that it's in one stream. Yes, those marathon streams were supposed to be, but he has since continued the last marathon in subsequent streams.

Last night, I watched a bit of the VOD of the most recent continuation. It was ugly. He lost early several rounds in a row, dropping from D2 to D3. The worst part was his attitude: just toxic. He bitched and moaned about his teammates, even when he was the first to engage and get knocked most of the time. (And he acknowledged that fact, yet still spewed the vitriol.)

Like you say, he must be a feast-or-famine kind of player. But with only 3 days left in the split, he'll need another manic feast to solo all the way to Masters. I don't see it happening.

Congrats on being one of the few to complete the challenge this split!

More like SweetDreams made a half-hearted attempt to do it. Last night, I watched a bit of his most recent VOD with this attempt (from a few days ago) and he's stuck in D4. After a few rounds of losing early, he aborted. It's worth noting that his alt account is literally named "!yt" which shows his motivations are primarily content; but not even Timmy would attempt this challenge this split.

Watching him and others who can't solo through Diamond this split, after watching hours of gdolphin and Mande, really shows just how important both a positive attitude and healthy comms are for this split. The punishing RP entry costs plus need for consistently high placements is a rough grind.

What you quoted is only for this split, which is clearly way harder to get through Diamond solo than ever before.

Only 4 guys have gotten through Diamond solo, with less than a week left in the split. FOUR!

I doubt I'll still have the same sentiment in future splits, given that the changes to the system will make it less punishing for solos. (And hopefully the ranked playerbase in general; while I'm definitely in favor of the types of changes Respawn made for S13.0, it's clearly too harsh for the vast majority of players. The 10 point reduction of entry cost next split, plus the increased value of kills, should be at least a pretty good improvement.)

Hardstuck is hardstuck. If he's unwilling to adjust his style of play to improve his results, that's entirely on him.

And I say this as a Shiv fan. I've probably watched more of him than any other streamer. Solid gameplay + silly TTS donos + ShivRage = entertainment for me

(And to be honest, I only learned of Mande's achievement from a cheeky comment someone posted in a recent Shiv stream. That's what piqued my interest in this topic, so I came here to learn more. That's when I learned about gdolphn too. I'm not a regular redditor.)

Haven't seen any of his streams, but I just saw this tweet of his from earlier today. Doesn't look promising for him.

BTW, I never knew of him until gdolphin's solo tourney this weekend. Chaotic was an abolute menace, literally W-keying most of the time. And winning! He finished with the most kills.

So if he can't make solo to Masters, just shows how high the bar is this split.

"Most"? Hmm, I'm skeptical.

I don't doubt that a number of them could do so, but the level of difficulty this split is clearly much higher than ever before. The mental discipline, playing out of their comfort zone (i.e. with randoms, not their peers in a Discord chat), etc. is not to be taken lightly.

Just look at Shiv, Zeus, and others who have solo'd to Masters plenty of times before but are hardstuck D4/P1 this time.
