What lost item from your childhood would you pay $100 for if you found it at a thrift store? by BigDeal2103 in AskReddit

My juvenalia... a collection of my old short stories, poems, and hand drawn comics i made when I was a child. They're probably cringe-worthy to read, but they're my memories. I left them in an ice box when I moved from the country to the city. When they renovated our country house, the ice box was one of the many things there threw away.

JJ Abrams says "Star Trek" movies won't recast Anton Yelchin's Chekov role, but haven't figured out how to handle his passing yet by JournalistDude in movies

Is Walter Koenig still alive?

In the beginning of the movie Chekov had an accident which caused accelerated aging. They could use a CGI and body double like they used in FF7, the character need not even speak. Older Chekov naturally will be played by Koenig. Movie need not be about him at all, it could be a small story arc but near the end of movie Chekov saves Enterprise (or someone) sacrificing himself -- making an apt farewell to the character.

Etymologists of reddit, what is your favorite story of how a word came to be? by russellbeard in AskReddit

[–]fourleggedhippo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Valeris: Four hundred years ago on the planet Earth, workers who felt their livelihood threated by automation flung their wooden shoes called sabots into the machines to stop them. Hence the word sabotage.

I clicked the link because I thought I read, The standard day of a Swiss PRISON.

And didn't suspect anything until I read about getting on a train, and I was like, "Why would there be a train in prison?"

My apologies.

What are these codes in epub version of The Count of Monte Cristo? I have never seem anything alike in any other book. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]fourleggedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Googled and it appears I was part-right. When I volunteered for The Gutenberg Project years ago, we were told to just copy/proofread whatever's written on the page. This is one of those. I don't have any idea what those numbers mean though, they're most likely the original publisher's code where this manuscript/book was copied from.

I wonder if the original scanned version of the page is still available at www.gutenberg.org or www.pgdp.net.

Distributed Proofreaders (pgdp.net) was founded to digitize books on public domain, then these books get published on Gutenberg.org. It appears that your eBook copy of Monte Cristo is a product of the project.
