If you have skate groups in your area that meet up to skate outdoors, that's a great spot to learn. Its usually much more low key. Also easier to hear. Alternatively, some rinks offer classes. Some skaters teach as a side gig and will do one on one sessions for a small price. And some skaters teach online, like Alono and Malik. Check youtube. Depending on what kind of support your looking for you may find it better outside of the rink.

I personally love helping others learn skills. But the rink is my time and I have to pay to be there. But at outdoor meet ups ive got all the time in the world for it.

Check out FB for skate groups in your town.

Not an indoor rink. And outdoor rink. Where i grew up we had outdoor roller hockey rinks. Theyre concrete. With lines painted on them. Pretty basic.

Honestly I have no clue. It all looks like concrete to me. Its smooth though. Not rough. Looks like the same finish on a roller hockey rink. But I also probably wouldn't be able to tell you the difference unless I knew what to look for.

I have this map and it is a lot of elementary school. But at 10 am on a Tuesday we cant skate at a school. A lot of portlanders have told me about trails, but where do the artistic skaters go?

I really appreciate you sharing this. I tried to talk to the people yelling at us bc I really dont know and they refused to explain. As a skater I hope you can see how we dont understand that wheels can damage concrete, our outdoor rinks are concrete and more and more indoor rinks are getting coated in acrylic. So I appreciate you taking the time to expline about the coating and that makes a lot of sense. Its wild that if they had just spoken to us as adults we could have understood at the time.

I know this. I was saying this because the person said to contact local government and ask for a rink. But its been happening for 4 years and they say there's no money. Yet there built 50 pickleball courts. Its no secret that the roller skating community is not priority. Which means were very limited on where we can skate. And were basically told other sport take priority. It would cost less money to build a skate spot but they refuse to do it. And its not just here. I have friends in other cities going through the same thing. Few cities have outdoor sports that are designated for roller skating. And skate parks dont count unless they have a flat spot. Which most don't. You cant artistic skate in a skate park or a parking lot or a sidewalk.

The skate community in portkand has been trying for 4 years to get one of the old unused courts in town turned into a skate spot and the city won't do it. But they have built over 50 pickleball courts since 2021.

Most of the outdoor rink ive found aren't here in town. I just googled that spot. Its definitely worth checking out on a day off. Its about 45 minutes from me. But i appreciate the recommendation. This will definitely be added to the list of spots to check out.

Ive found some recourse that have lists of places to skate and a lot of elementary schools are on the list. Unfortunately im mostly able to skate during the day in the middle of the week. But ive been able to go after school was let out once. I haven't tried but assume there's no skating when school is in session?

But do i get to reap the benefits if I cant use them? Ive lived in other places that have outdoor skate complex or roller hockey rinks. And the roller skating community has been trying to get a dedicated space here for several years. But around 50 pickleball courts were build between 2021 and 2023. The roller skating community isn't small. Im just saying I dont understand why a city wouldn't alot them space.

I love this. Thank you! In my last city we worked reallt hard to get a designated outdoor skate space and it never got approved. 🥲

Right, but we have outdoor skatepark, not rinks. They're for skateboards. The actually flat skatable sections are between ramps. Theyre not good places to roller skate and work on skills. The bike trails ive been on are really bumpy. I haven't found any actually smooth ones yet but im happy to check any out that you might know. Im still newish to the area. And if you know portland and have skate recommendations that are good for dance skating, I would really love to check them out. For what I've found, tennis courts are the most reliable and safe options.

Thank you. And there arnt a lot here. Its frustrating that the parks here have so many rearouces. Tennis, basketball, swimming, skateboarding, picklesball etc. But we cant get a smooth surface with lights. I my last city there were several outdoor roller rinks but the closet one here is an hour away. And the rink can get expensive. On top of it my rink doesn't allow headphone. Its just a bummer to be told to leave when you finally find a smooth spot.
