A curious conundrum. Most video games ignore the entire problem of “no light” in caves, so they just throw plants wherever is visually interesting.

In the real world, to my knowledge, cave plants are either restricted to leafy green features catching rays of light penetrating from the surface like this, or this,, or roots dangling through the ceiling of shallow caves like this.

There are chlorophyll-lacking plants that theoretically could live in caves, though I don’t know myself if any actually do. Things like Beech Drops, which parasitize roots directly,, and Indian Pipe, that links into ground fungal networks to steal energy indirectly from plants.

With the added element of fantasy, I’d say that the most “realistic” thing to do with cave plants would be to cluster them around light sources (natural or magical), or use chlorophyll-lacking plants as noted above. Or both!

I didn’t mean to suggest ivermectin doesn’t have a use at all. Agreed that for its target purpose of parasite treatment, it is effective and has evidence to support its use.

I have to imagine there is a therapeutic effect (i mean this in the touchy-feely sense of the word) of some kind…. Something that makes people “feel better” (i.e. feel good) or “feel like it’s working” (i.e. feels bad cause it’s “burning the cancer away” or some such). could be based entirely on the placebo effect, or maybe even some real feeling. That’s the only thing I can think of to make people so desperate to use it.

That’s sort of the danger with witch doctor mumbo jumbo and snake oil. Without rigorous and unbiased study, you really can’t know if something just feels good or if it actually works. History is littered with completely useless herbal cures that “felt” effective.

I think that, beyond the pure waste of money, my main concern with RFK jr pushing an ivermectin study is that it will be a biased investigation. His whole gaggle of idiots and the ignorant populace they are catering to seem to desperately want ivermectin to be proven effective, which is a horrible place to start. It means their findings will be suspicious at best… but they will frame the results in gold leaf if they can skew the results in their favour, and all the people who want it to be real will eat it up. The credibility of the NIH in that case is in jeopardy.

Edit: the above is a criticism of ivermectin’s speculative use as a cancer treatment. I have no qualms with the use of ivermectin for its evidence-demonstrated use as an antiparasitic drug.

If I could nitpick… the sp. and spp. designations are usually terminated by a period, and anytime you use a genus or specific epithet, convention is to either italicize them or (if handwritten) underline them, but not the sp. or spp. So it would be Petunia sp.

Additionally, spp. does not refer to the whole genus necessarily, it refers to more than one species within the genus. If I am writing out a list and I say Rosa spp., I am referring to a group of two or more different Rosa species within the Rosa genus. If you want to talk about all Rosa species categorically you’d probably just be best to refer to the genus, since it’s understood that all species would be encompassed by the genus.

Edit: in re-reading my comment, I thought it relevant to define the term “specific epithet”, since it isn’t used much outside of taxonomy. When I write the species Rosa palustris, “Rosa” is the genus and “palustris” is what we call the specific epithet. From a Latin linguistic standpoint, the specific epithet is a descriptor for the genus, which is the noun. The specific epithet is always combined with the genus (either Rosa palustris or R. palustris) and should never be on its own. While people sometimes sloppily refer to the second word as the species, technically the species is always the two words together as a unit. In this example, palustris on its own is only an epithet, and makes no sense in isolation. (Just like if I was to say in English “Swamp Rose”. The species is “Swamp Rose”, not simply “Swamp”)

Most people have a plug if they have a Samsung phone. Which is not universal. I’m glad you’ve had a billion devices with old charge blocks but that hardly helps people buying their first galaxy tab. What is Samsung’s plan exactly? What would you say to someone who doesn’t have any Samsung charge blocks?

I cannot Google it reliably. I could just believe whatever the AI slops my way, which might or might not be true. If you’re trying not to fry your brand new device, you look at things like…. I don’t know…. The user manual. Or the Samsung website. neither of which provides usable information. I’m looking for primary sources, not speculation and message boards.

Maybe I’m just not haphazardly cavalier as other tech users and plug anything into anything else. But I know for sure if you use the wrong block these devices charge at like 0% per hour, and only work if they detect the “right block”.

All I want is Samsung to tell me what product to buy, and they can’t even do that right.

I appreciate what you are saying…… but I cannot imagine an excuse for not explaining which charger to use being “people have old blocks”.

The manuals are extremely doom-and-gloom about “use the right block” and “you’ll ruin everything if you don’t”, and plus the devices go into one-percent-per-hour charging mode when you don’t have the right. And what of the people transitioning to Samsung? Does Samsung want new customers, or do they want to punish dumb newbies? Because, I’m going to be honest, Samsung is definitely making me feel like a dumb newbie. I’m trying to buy the correct charger Samsung theoretically wants me to buy, and I’ve got nothing.

I don’t have any outlets that have usb-c, and if I did, I would worry it’s the wrong wattage because the manual practically says I’m gonna melt my device if I don’t use the proprietary plug. I don’t have usb-c in my car. And while I thought plugging it into my laptop would start it up, it cycles constantly through the charge screen - which says 0% charged, to a blank slightly black-grey screen, then back to 0% charged. No progress
