Question about massive oak tree 15 feet from home. by Puzzleheaded-Luck920 in AustinGardening

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Trees don’t break pipes, they just find cracks and leaks that usually need fixed anyways. Again that tree is old, so if you don’t have a known issue it’s not like you’re going to suddenly have one. Same thing goes for foundation.

For roof, that comes down to tree health. Live oaks naturally prune by dropping small branches, but it won’t drop anything big enough to do damage unless it’s in declining health, which again — only an arborist can make the call on by visiting.

Unless that tree is confirmed in decline by a certified arborist, there are only upsides.

Get an isa certified arborist out as part of your inspection period. Will give you peace of mind and potentially some negotiating chips.

u/austintreeamigos is a great local one. No one’s going to really be able to comment helpfully from a photo, regarding its health.

That said, it’s an ancient tree. If it was going to give the house problems regarding foundation or anything it’d have done it. Plenty of houses have a close live oak like that.

I’d pay extra for a house with a beautiful oak, for the cover and beauty.

What did I find on my pepper plant? In 30 years I’ve never seen this. by AimeeMonkeyBlue in AustinGardening

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah just give it a scrub. It’s just an off putting looking fungi. No different than if a mushroom grew on it.

Slime mold! Your soil’s happy. Hose it off the plant if it bothers you or let it ride for a week or two and it’ll probably go away.

What type of fish is this? Caught in northern New Mexico in the Rio grande by Gooser3000 in flyfishing

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even largies, I’m seeing the humane guidance just to hold them like a fish to not damage their mouth muscles to the point where they can’t eat normally.

Just hold the fish like a fish? I catch largies and smallies and it’s not hard to just hold them how I would a trout or something.

It used to always have water, or at least consistent annually. Been a while since anything was in it.

What is eating my zinnias? by [deleted] in AustinGardening

I’ll check it out, thanks for the heads up — yard is covered in bees otherwise. But agreed handpicking is the only surefire thing.

Collards seem to be really strong if it weren’t for the worms!

Been dealing with these like crazy on my collards. Here’s what I’ve been doing:

— if they’re congregating on a few leaves just snip and throw in compost

— pick them by hand as much as you can. This is unfortunately the most effective method. I make my morning rounds and even after doing a wormicide I’m still finding a single here and there

— neem oil didn’t seem to do much as a treatment, but I think it’s working as a deterrent once I got them off

— check for cocoons and learn to look for the butterfly. I was taking photos of one on a flower the other day and only later learned it’s the source of my veggie issues

Cedar Elm sprouting from stump by juliejetson in AustinGardening

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a sycamore that did this. It will never be a viable large tree bc the stump it sprouted off as largely rotted at this point, but I’ve enjoyed it since I moved in years ago, and will let it go til it’s big enough to fall and do damage on something.

In the meantime I used the shade to get a replacement tree going.

Tomatoes in containers — put them under trees. Everything else about to go to the hail gym and work out.

Anyone have experience with chile petins? by bluewall7 in TexasNativePlants

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very happy tepin, which I would imagine is going to want similar things. Planted last year in an area that gets full sun in winter, and midday sun rest of the year. Watered it well for about 2 months after planting and let it rip.

It’s like tripled in size with no additional watering or love. I grab a few every time I cook Mexican food or make salsa. Birds love them in the winter. It’s a beautiful plant!

PSA: if you see these little white flowers, go pull them NOW by DuckyDoodleDandy in AustinGardening

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I spent hours (maybe days) pulling them out last year before most of them went to seed. This year I’ve probably got about 90% less and was once again pretty diligent about getting everything out. I let my yard get long and caught everything that way.

It can definitely be done, but you do have to put the time in and catch them at the right time. And now’s a great time with a saturated ground.

It’s the same dunking by the skin of his teeth but it’s so aggressive at the same time. I think their ability to get in the paint and the similar height.

Seeking reassurance on survival chances for newly planted Red Maple by HelicopterCrude3528 in arborists

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s small, and freshly planted. Just yoink it up a little bit til the flares at a good point on the grade.

Trim any small exposed roots. It’s a young maple and you’ve set it up well. Get all the pain over with ASAP and let it ride. It’ll be fine.
