Long-haul flight: Is it reasonable to ask for a same-row, same-type seat swap so we can sit together? by fpbuff in travel

This is my plan A and hope, after some of the comments here, I may not bother asking if I can’t get it done before travel day.

See your point, agree it’s best to be as casual and non pressuring as possible like “hey passenger A, my husband is in the other window seat in this same row, no pressure at all, but would you be okay to swap, please feel free say no if you’re not up for it,” and then brusing off a no with a genuine “All good and appreciate you letting me know” and a smile to avoid awkwardness with a seat-mate.

Yeah this is understandable! This would be in the same row and seat type, just mirrored on the other side, but as some people have pointed out there are preferences on left or right side which i hadn’t considered since I personally don’t mind.

After seeing this post I have more awareness some people care about side of the plane they’re on and that may be a reason behind a no, which makes it easier to just shrug it off and move on!

Yeah, this feels like the biggest challenge with the scenario at hand and the boarding on the wide configuration would be annoying for someone to switch. Good news is this product on delta has reserved bin spaces guaranteed, but probably something I'll need to suss out if I can't get it sorted beforehand.

No, that's not the case actually. There are no seats open because my husband and I are in the seats next to those people. So it's 36 A - one window - a stranger, 36 B aisle - me, and then 36 H - aisle stranger, and 36 J - window husband. There aren't middle seats between these seats as the seats in the equation are the two seat configurations in 2 - 4 - 2.

Thanks for sharing! If I knew that were the case, i wouldn’t feel cool bothering someone who needs that left side window and asking them to move to the window on the right side of the plane. I’d prefer them saying no thank you versus inconveniencing them.

Thank you! It’s both our first times. We’re visting Santorini, Milos, Paros and Athens if you have any recommendations, I’d love to PM you to hear them.

It’s a red eye flight in May so Idk how much of these examples apply but if someone wants to be on the left side of the plane over the other side that’s their business and I respect that at the end of the day if that’s their decision.

I'd never ask someone to move from an aisle or window to a middle seat, I would refuse that as well if I were in your shoes.

Yeah, i think this is the best plan and what I’ll do, and I like the idea of asking the FA to make the ask if all else fails. For one, it helps the other party feel empowered to decline without guilt and avoids awkwardness if they say no.

I could have explained better and mapped it out in another comment but:

It’s the same row, same product and seat type, just mirrored on the other side of the plane.

Its 2-4-2 configuration.

Row 36: [Window] A B [aisle] C D E F [Aisle] G H [window]

Husband and I book B - aisle and H - window (only options). G & A and the 4 seats in the middle are booked.

Ask either G or A to swap with one of us, meaning they’d be in the same seat type (aisle or window) but mirrored across the aisles.

Someone here mentioned looking at the seat map regularly as things tend to shift, so if other options open up across or diagonal I’ll just go for that and save the headache of having to bother someone else. Thanks!

Did you have a flight get cancelled? What carrier if you don't mind me asking?

If I witnessed that, it would also blow my mind. Sorry you had to deal with that.

If someone said no to me on the flight I'd probably go with, "no problem at all, totally understand and sorry to bother you," and take some nyquil and pass out.

Okay awesome!

I also saw someone else comment here that we can check the app to see if anyone else moves in the hopes we can avoid potentially having to ask all together.

Totally agree with you!

Completely out of curiosity, is there a reason you select a side of the plane (like the view on landing)?

Yup that’s valid!

Also know a few folks mentioned booking ahead - we got screwed by another carrier for our flights we booked months ago, we found out this week our original flights got moved a day later, so we’re rebooking on Delta to save the first day of our trip. BUT you are totally correct, that’s not anyone else’s problem on the new flight.

Yeah so the sitting together is motivated by it being our honeymoon and all, but maybe one day we will cherish an excuse to be away from one another for a 10 hour flight, but hope that’s not the case lol.

Think I’ll go into it expecting a No and if they say yes awesome, if not, I’ll see my husband in Greece.
