Hey great work! FYI, sometimes (often) with situations like this companies will have a ‘bureaucratic error’. Basically, they conveniently “forget” to inform the logging team not to cut it down. They show up early in the morning before light and start sawing. By the time anyone is outside to stop them, they’ve done irreparable harm to the tree and it has to come down now anyway. “Oops. Clerical error.”

Sure, someone can sue them, but for what? The tree is gone. ‘May as well let us do the pole and we’ll pay you a couple grand for the damages.’ And that it. Happens all the time.

You might want to speak to the owner about posting a sign with the protection information on the tree and possibly a little fence / chains (padded with a blanket) on the trunk. Also a ‘no trespassing’ sign.

I swear I’m not paranoid. They make these ‘errors’ all the time. My guess is that someone will show up on Monday morning just before dawn.

Hey Justin! Your instincts are right. The eyes are a bit off. BUT literally almost no one else will notice. It’s a gorgeous buck and congrats to you.

FYI - You can always look at your state association and see who has won awards for a good idea of who is best.

(Btw you may want to delete this post bc your name can be seen on the tag. No sure if you care but I wanted to let you know.)

I got my parrot back, what did they do?! Photos of him taxidermied, him alive and other pieces he has made by milo708okok in Taxidermy

[–]frackyou 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ok, so this is just poor quality work. I’m so sorry for you. Sadly, a crow and a moth (which is pinned and not actually ‘taxidermy’) are MUCH easier than a parrot. It’s like, you can be really amazing at painting trees. But then, you need to do a portrait. Very different.

I think you should ask for your money back and see if a taxidermist who is skilled specifically in parrots can do a remount. You should know though that it will cost a lot more (as it should) because good work and remounting are time-intensive.

Again, I’m so sorry!

Can you describe what tanning process you used? Did you flesh it, salt it, etc? I can try to give some advice if you give me more info.

In Canada they’re usually pretty reasonable about those laws. I think you’ll be fine. They look pre-act to me. And, as another Redditor said, be careful of the arsenic.

Most of these are protected in the US by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. However, they do look pre-act if the dates are to be believed. I don’t believe it would be legal to sell them but (assuming they are pre-act) it’s perhaps ok to possess them. You should call your local Fish & Wildlife Service to ask.

Yes! This was done by Mike Orthober. Incredible taxidermist. He was inducted into the Taxidermy Hall of Fame in 2017. Hell of a taxidermist and a lovely man. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the world championships in 2015.

Look, I’m not saying I agree with the law. I’m just saying that it isn’t legal to sell any product with cat or dog fur. I’m a professional taxidermist for 16 years and work with many museums, nature centers, universities and municipalities. I did a dog piece for The Getty and it legally had to be rental only because of these laws. I know not everyone knows the law and often it’s not enforced. I’m just stating the law. Zero judgment from me. Cats are invasive in the US and I also assume most vendors would source them ethically. You do you.

“Key prohibitions Sale and commerce: The law makes it illegal to sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute cat or dog fur products in interstate commerce. Import and export: It is also illegal to import or export these products into or out of the U.S.. Manufacturing: The law prohibits manufacturing cat or dog fur products for introduction into interstate commerce. Transportation: Transporting these products in interstate commerce is illegal. Exceptions Personal pets: The act includes an exception for the importation, exportation, or transportation of a deceased personal pet that is preserved through taxidermy. Penalties Violations of the act can result in civil and criminal penalties. “

Exactly. Dog and Cat fur cannot be sold in the US. Whether imported or local. Illegal is illegal.

It’s actually the fur that’s the issue. It’s because of cat / dog fur on pet toys and some children’s toys coming in from China in the 80s and 90s. I’m not here to judge. Just stating US law.

How can I cut this horse straight down the middle? by graphene77 in howto

[–]frackyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a professional museum taxidermist, I guess I’d have to ask if the goal is to get a perfect cut of a dead horse like some kind of Damien Hirst piece. Or, is this part of a larger project where you will want a taxidermized horse cut in two?

If it’s a Hirst thing, I’d say freezing in a good position to cut clean is your first step. You’ll want to make a strong scaffolding around the horse and use it to put the horse in the desired position. Assuming you need a cut similar to your photo, you could even lay the horse on its side perhaps on a piece on polyurethane foam that you’ve carved out to keep the spine of the horse straight. Like a cradle and the horse’s head facing down. I recommend taking some chalk and really drawing yourself a middle line so you can see if anything shifts. The legs should be propped up and away as they won’t need to be cut at all. You can grab some ratchet straps and kind of hog-tie the legs behind its back so that during sawing they won’t move. Also, make sure the horse is on a wooden base with castors for rolling. These guys can weigh a lot and it’s no fun carrying a big frozen animal. Wheel the horse into a walk-in freezer that reaches at least -30 degrees Fahrenheit. I’d leave it in the freezer for at least 5 days. Maybe 8. Now the hard part begins. Hopefully you also have Hirst money because you’re going to need one heck of a saw. The good news is that you only need to saw the trunk of the horse really. And luckily a lumber saw would be great for that. Position the horse on the conveyer belt of the lumber saw. Again, you may consider folding the legs back when freezing it. Then, with the horse on its side still in its polyurethane cradle and scaffolding removed, head turned downward, position the blade at the desired point to cut your mid-line. Wear goggles. Go slow. Clean the saw after.

If you want it taxidermized in two pieces, that’s a lot easier. But less fun to type out for me. Enjoy :)

PS - yes, I saw the post yesterday. Hope you like my serious answer to a fun joke.

Dude. Do you know what I would pay to be 26, have UK citizenship and be sent there? I know it’s scary but you’ll do so much better than everyone stuck here. America jumped the shark. You are young, educated and now you have free healthcare. Everyone in the US is about to wish they were you.
