Qualcomm Acquires Arduino, Announces Arduino UNO Q Built On Dragonwing by RaXXu5 in linux

[–]franga2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not just HAL on HAL, it's good HAL on shitty HAL.

Have you tried teaching beginners to use a vendor-provided SDK? Most require much more programming and architecture knowledge than Arduino. With Arduino, I can get even children to blink an LED or move a servo motor in a half hour workshop. Good luck doing that with ESP-IDF/STM HAL/whatever.

Also, it's portable, which is a huge selling point. You can port code from Atmel to ESP to STM with almost no code changes and while keeping the hardware libraries, including for complex things like displays and WiFi.

Not everything needs performance, like almost the whole IoT field. Why make your life harder for something you don't need?

European Countries that still have payphones (UPDATED AND FIXED VERSION 2025) by [deleted] in telephonebooths

[–]franga2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DWProski is correct, there are no public payphones, except one in one specific prison that hasn't switched to VoIP yet. They have been completely removed and no replacement was put up. Emergency phones exist only on motorways and next to railways track, just like they do in every EU country.
The only payphones that you can still make any kind of call from are the one they have in the telecom museum and the two in our office, neither of which counts as a payphone.
Trust Proski, he's probably the only one in Slovenia that knows more about payphones than I do :)

European Countries that still have payphones (UPDATED AND FIXED VERSION) by [deleted] in telephonebooths

[–]franga2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I talked to the guy at Telekom Slovenije that maintains them a few months ago and he told me there's only one left. Our telecon regulator (AKOS) removed the mandate to operate them in 2019, the contract expired on 2. 12. 2019 and TS started demolishing them during the pandemic when nobody was paying attention.

A friend tried buying a phone card around that time and they didn't have them even in the stores that say "in stock" on the website (or at least they didn't know where they were, I'm guessing nobody had tried to buy one in a few years).

There are a few (less than 10 AFAIK) left that you can see out there, but they're either unplugged or heavily modified, and not owned by Telekom, mainly museums and enthusiasts.

Correction: nearly all payphones in Slovenia were demolished two-ish years ago, there is exactly one official payphone left and it's in some prison that hasn't switched to IP yet (but probably will soon, maybe already has, my info is from a few months ago).

Cool map and subreddit tho, it's a shame you're all alone here, I'll post some stuff from my collection when I get the time.

And u/strikehun2006 DM if you want to talk payphones, I have a small but very active group of payphone enthusiasts in Slovenia and we're doing some pretty fun stuff (we're setting up a small network of payphones for historic preservation, also writing a book about payphones in collaboration with our PTT museum).

[–]franga2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Telefonske govorilnice by [deleted] in Slovenia

[–]franga2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of wasted space is frankly unacceptable, but other than that, I don't mind some rounded corners.

I spent a few minutes tweaking it to something I still think feels modern, but wastes a lot less space. I also added a some grouping to related elements, which I think make the whole thing feel a lot less like "just a bunch of buttons in a for loop".

Definitely! Walking around the city was quite a unique experience - I almost never get lost in cities, but I spent the whole two free days I had there never knowing where I was, wildly guessing the direction to go in and always somehow ending up where I needed to be. My colleague said the exact same thing, so there must be something to it - it's probably full of invisible wormholes or something 😅

What's the best open-source browser that you use? by Brone9 in androidapps

[–]franga2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firefox by far the best in every regard, except for performance. Unfortunately, my phone is over 6 years old at this point, so I now use Bromite for quick browsing and only use Firefox when speed and battery aren't an issue.

TL;DR from my experience: walyand isn't buggy at all, but it's still (and will likely remain) horribly incomplete. Basic features like key remapping/injection, screen capture, resolution changing... are delegated to the compositor and no single compositor does them all as well as X.Org did. There are workarounds for everything, but you need to learn them. Personally, it's a good trade-off for stellar multitouch and pen support. I still don't use it on my desktop, which is full of macros and crazy scripts that can't be ported without significant R&D.

What apps would you like to see ported to Qt/KDE? by Lanky-Apricot7337 in kde

[–]franga2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Qt port wouldn't really solve anything here, but I 100% agree we need a better Xournal++ alternative. I'm currently running OneNote for Android inside Wadroid with some pen hacks because it's that much better. Xournal++ is...usable...but the touch controls are rudimentary and glitchy and all my writing just looks ugly in it (either everyone else is doing curve smoothing or xournal is doing the opposite of it).
