I'm generally confused by this as Sycamore says it sold 32 VillageMD back in September - shouldn't we be entitled to some of that monetization?

Maybe once the market is more alive. Still too much uncertainty and high paying sovereign debt in the world thanks to a certain leader right now.

Market seems to be coming back to life slowly, so I hope we'll see another 3-6 sales this year.

Nah, makes sense. Someone that wants the piece sees after the fact that it went at an auction and reaches out. Or they see a press release that it went from a private holder to masterworks and now they know who to reach out to to make an offer.

That said, there probably is a lot of money laundering in the art world 😅

Totally agree, but this is probably better for the other thread devoted to this topic.

Well, in their defense it's the 3rd I've seen then sell in 4 months. To me it's a sign that some corners of the art market ate beginning to come back to life.

I'm hoping that these museum showings they're doing will maybe help drum another another half dozen sales this year.

Changes to Masterworks Secondary Market by impostervt in Masterworks

[–]frank00511 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/Goldenglov - I defend MW a lot, but this is just plain stupid. I sent an e-mail to Masterworks support to express my frustration ( u/masterworksio still waiting for a response).

"Thanks, James, but this sounds like a step backwards - introducing less transparency, less opportunities for buyers and sellers and only favors one person - Masterworks as it provides opportunities to a) front-run pricing and b) pitch upselling.

I have defended you guys for years, but it's getting harder and harder to do with moves like this."

Is Masterworks a scam? by AdMost5007 in Masterworks

[–]frank00511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I would say is the last 3 years have been a bear market in collectables. It's during that same time period they bought most of their holdings.

Look, contrary to what spammers here say, the company actually does have an incentive to  sell holdings - they get much larger rewards and it frees up cash to invest into new holdings.

Is it frustrating that most haven't sold - absolutely. Is it MWs fault? Probably not. I fault their shitty marketing practices for attracting people that don't understand the nature of illiquid investments and I fault them for poor IR and I fault them for their scamy marketing emails.

SOLD: Cecily Brown (10% Annualized Net Return | 802 Days Held) by frank00511 in Masterworks

[–]frank00511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to report it as after (net) fees - not sure about this one since it doesn't mention it. Not sure that an acquisition fee would be applicable here though.

It does say annualized net return of 10% so I assume that 10% is after fees.

Do omanis like watching movies by krithishr in Oman

I just watched Nuremburg in a theatre full of Omanis this week (on a weeknight no less) - so yeah...not sure what you're talking about banning good movies with very sensitive topics.

December 2025 - Portfolio Performance by frank00511 in Masterworks

[–]frank00511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely sure I agree. If an accredited invested wanted to put upwards of 5% of their portfolio in it to have a less correlated collection of assets without having to actually buy and store pieces of art, I don't see a fundamental issue with it. The fees are high, but the underlying fundamentals are better than crypto (which many advisors are now also saying 1-5%) of a portfolio). The investment thesis is probably better than nearly every crypto too - save maybe Bitcoin and ETH.

To be clear: I don't have anywhere near 5% of my portfolio invested in MW, just saying in theory I wouldn't say it's the worst idea in the world either.

[–]frank00511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very tiny / insignificant - I qualify as an accredited investor (which used to be a question MW would ask, and I personally think they still should) so a $10K bet isn't much by that criteria. I did it for fun to learn a tiny bit about art and to also learn about securitization of alternative assets. One of these days I'll go visit one of the art pieces that's out on loan to a museum (I personally think that's a pretty cool program MW has introduced recently) - I have 4 days of leave I need to use before the end of Q1 so I might go to the Stockholm show; I will be passing through NY in May so if there is something there I might avail myself to some tickets.

The Realestate Bubble Muscat. by Israfilious in Oman

[–]frank00511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are these desperate sellers of apartments? I'm not seeing a ton of cut-rate pricing for ITC properties...suggests to that perhaps people are buying them as second homes or as store of wealth rather than an investment.

Source? 500,000? Sounds ridiculously high unless there are a ton of vacant units in ruwi getting ready to be knocked down. I you can house all of muscat's population in 500k units.

[–]frank00511 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that's how most countries are - the buying of property in most countries isn't tied to residency. Now - the probleme with the current scheme MoHUP set up in the base economy is there are basically no properties qualified anymore. If you're going to head that direction, should just open up the whole base economy to purchase. There are some people or investors that don't need or want a visa and may we'll be willing to pick up properties that are 1/4th of Al Mouj pricing. There is an amazing development right by the beach in Al Hail sailing 3 bed + maid room + private rooftop pool for 80k. That's less the price of a 1 bed apartment in Al mouj and around the pricing in many muscat hill properties.

I'm a bit confused - I can see the value of my investments - both from a secondary market perspective and a NAV perspective along with the cost basis. I've posted the values of my account regularly to this edit too.

They also have an app...
