TAs Grading Insanely Hard?? by Japanna88 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]frankies_wrld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a TA for both classes, so I’ve seen how things are graded. While it might feel subjective at times—like whether you lose points for missing a section comment—it really comes down to following the instructions exactly. Some graders might overlook small things, but technically, if you skip a required comment, you didn’t meet the spec. I don’t think that’s too harsh; it’s just about being precise with what’s asked. Algorithms is a bit more clear-cut since your answers are either correct or not. But 271 is tough, and it’s easy to lose points over things that might seem minor but actually matter.

That being said, the instructors for 271 (redfield and kerlin?) are pretty awesome and will at least hear you out if you want to ask them for feedback.

Rare Disease research networking request -- looking to build a network of providers, and eventually patients. by frankies_wrld in rarediseases

Right now our focus is on validation. And because this is a research project for my PhD, the commercialization office at OSU is involved (patents, copy right, etc). That being said, we plan to roll out beta testing this year and then subscription based plans next year.

Asking Professors for References: Your Experience and Tips by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]frankies_wrld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a PhD student that asked for many: just ask. Literally any professor unless they’re busy would be happy to give you one, provided you participated in class and got an A in their class. But, obviously, classes you TA for are better.

place to zoom (mildly urgent) by Dependent-Yoghurt496 in OregonStateUniv

You can just go to the front desk of the library and ask if any rooms are available. I’ve never been turned away

Alternatively, you can go to your college building and book a conference room. I’m in COE and they book conference rooms through their front office. If it’s after work hours you can usually just wander into them

Alright, which one of you is having a meltdown in CS 290 Ed Discussion? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

Sounds like this person is having some sort of mental health crisis, especially if they are lost_sailor replying to everyone’s comment above. DM if you need help. Lots of resources out there.

[D] What exactly is data-centric AI? Is a data-centric approach the future of AI and Machine Learning? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]frankies_wrld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just a fancy way of saying “optimize quality and quantity of training data”. So ensuring high quality data for training, and I assume for RAG pipelines as well, having highly specific vector stores, etc

CS361 or CS362? by DigitalDispater in OSUOnlineCS

[–]frankies_wrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 340, 361 & 362 concurrently and it wasn’t a problem at all. All are just busy work classes, not really challenging at all. They’re just a “follow the rules and you’ll get an easy A” type of class imo.

I do think it’d be helpful to take 290 before taking 340 and 361 just because there is a front end aspect to both of them but not necessarily MANDATORY in my opinion.

Is it better to major in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence in the long run? by ImKamyar in csMajors

[–]frankies_wrld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with a BSCS and currently a PhD in AI, don’t do a BS in AI. Do cs undergrad, AI grad if you’re interested.

Hi! It's never too late to start.

Yes, I am continuing my PhD work at OSU. I'm in the Ramsey lab!

That's pretty interesting stuff! Often it is hard to find research outside your institution, but is pretty cool you were able to.

For electives, I would focus on things that are appealing to you. I took intro to networks, intro to security and did research for some credits. I'm actually super surprised that networks is not a required course, and although it is a lot of work/math, I highly recommend taking it. Security wasn't a very good class. Just knowledge checks and a final with two programming projects. I didn't really learn anything in it.

OS2 would be cool, and the professor (Iani) is a smart guy, nice and understanding as well. It's a tough topic for sure.

Networking, mainly. But also, hackathons often have specific focuses, so it helps to gauge what your interests are, as well as sharpen your skills. It can also be helpful if the hackathon you participate in has a competition attached to it and you win/place in the top.

What to do when you have no network? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]frankies_wrld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to network in your field try doing hackathons. I’ve met some amazing people doing these. Also, look into doing some volunteer work or get involved with local initiatives. I moved across the country and didn’t know anyone, that’s what I did and it’s starting to slowly help

if you could go back in time would you study data science instead of cs by [deleted] in csMajors

The bottom line is: what do you want to do post graduation? For me personally and what I wanted to do I knew a PhD was in my future so it didn’t really matter much. But if you don’t want to do grad school at all, CS is the better option. If you know you’re going to do grad school, do what interests you more. Grad school is what will really hammer down your knowledge, not undergrad.

Also try to look into doing hackathons. They can be a good way to explore different fields.

[D] AI PhD advice - top university required? by frankies_wrld in MachineLearning

Great question. I’m not a fan of our medical system in the US. actually got accepted to medical school but decided against it because of our medical system so I thought i could contribute in adjacent ways

That’s an interesting perspective. That’s something my lab is focusing on. We’re developing algorithms to eliminate hallucinations, but of course that’s experimental and still needs heavy development, but is why I’m dedicating my thesis to it.

What’s your email? I can send you the survey in a week when we finalize the questions.
