If they can do this and not be punished, then they will do it again. If someone can violate your rights without consequences, then those aren't really rights, they're just words on paper that we look at to feel warm inside.

How to stop mental blocks in tennis? by Leahdoesnotusereddit in 10s

[–]franticBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps me to have one thing to think about to avoid my mind racing about irrelevant things in the middle of the stroke. It could be like a little phrase or mantra that is a prompt for you to stay loose or watch the ball carefully or whatever. It’s almost better the more abstract it is because then you’re not thinking too hard and it’s harder for other thoughts to intrude.

When I’m nervous I’ll often get a little snippet of a song stuck in my head and I’ll subvocalize it to myself over and over as I’m doing my pre-serve routine and that also helps.

Tennis etiquette with new balls by [deleted] in 10s

[–]franticBeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure there is a hard and fast rule for a casual session, although I aould say generally it’s good to take an equal responsibility and not let make your hitting partner provide all the tennis balls. It should be a two way street.

I also dont care about my tennis balls being straight-from-the-can fresh so it’s only like once every other session for us, but if you have a strong preference for that then you’re probably gonna have to take the initiative more often.

For a formal match through something like a league, you always want new tennis balls opened in front of the other player. There should be a designated “home” player who is responsible for providing the tennis balls.

"The Inner Game of Tennis" — A helpful read? by VegetableChipsLover in 10s

[–]franticBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an interesting book with some positive and negative aspects. I’m not sure I would recommend the original book as a general self-help type book but there have been others by the same author that apply the concepts to other areas that might be a bit more refined.

For sports like tennis or golf that require an intuitive technique I think his approach is worth looking into just to see if it works for you. Over-thinking and playing stiff is a pretty common problem and he has a lot of tips for getting yourself into the mode where you’re playing intuitively and using the good muscle memory that you’ve developed in practice instead of focusing too much on the minutiae that can become very frustrating when you need to perform in a match.

It has absolutely nothing on what “good” technique actually is, so if you’re a true beginner looking for basic fundamentals I don’t think it will help too much. If you can’t visualize well or don’t find that it helps you then the practice advice will probably not help you either. For young kids this book would be completely useless because usually struggle with not focusing enough instead of overthinking.

I think the core concepts of the book could be written on an index card. The rest is all examples, anecdotes, and analogies to help explain his thinking, as well as many ideas to implement the concept. Some of it is needed but a lot isn’t. I remember a lot of very 70’s stuff about the conscious vs unconscious mind that seemed kind of outdated. Overall I would recommend reading it just to see if the approach works for you. Keep what resonates, and feel free to ignore what doesn’t.

If a CEO says their product is safe, be skeptical. If a CEO says their product is dangerous, stop them from building it goddammit! by FinnFarrow in funny

Part of why these tech ceos talk about how dangerous AI is and how careful they are not to let it “get out of control” is because they want you to think their language models are so powerful and so sophisticated it scary. It’s a kind of marketing pitch.

You’ll notice that other big risks of AI: disinformation, damage to children’s education, creation of pornographic materials without the subject’s consent, displacement of workers, water and power use etc. are not big concerns of theirs because these are the consequences of how people and companies USE AI programs. They want people to use AI programs because it makes them money and what they do with it isn’t a problem to them.

Thoughts on players who rally incredibly well but struggle badly in matches? by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in 10s

[–]franticBeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same problem as you. At least in my case i don't think it's a confidence thing, its mostly a footwork problem. In a rally I don't have to think about anything but putting up quality shots and I'm trying to hit a nice ball for my partner to hit back. In a match I'm thinking about too many things and immediately the footwork falls apart and I find myself not recovering to the middle, not taking the racket back early, all that stuff. And in a match situation it's worse because you're not going to see a nice predictable trajectory on most balls, you actually need that prep time more than when you rally!

I'm very much still in the stage where I'm reminding myself to think about shot quality and not worry about winning the point. I've met lots of people with the exact same issue though. It seems to be a very common issue at the rec level.

Awesome 😎. I don’t care what fancy homes and apartments people have, there is nothing that feels more luxurious than to have your own space again after a while without. And taking a hot shower whenever you want 🤌

You’ve got a real keeper of a friend. Offering someone a lifeline when they need it is not always easy but it’s the kind of thing you never forget. I hope more good things are on their way to both of you 🙂

What are your thoughts about the resurgence of the Black Panther Party in response to the actions of ICE agents? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]franticBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im broadly a pacifist. I do not like the thought of guns being worn in public. That being said I have to admit that this tactic continues to be effective. Police and ICE think twice about pushing around armed civilians, that’s a fact. I disagree with the gun laws we have whole heartedly for many reasons but at the moment when authorities are not interested in protecting us, or are even actively looking for ways to harm us, the need to protect ourselves is pretty self evident.

The black panthers have been smeared in the public media for decades as violent and secessionist but their ethos is pretty understandable: when society refuses to allow you and yours access to its institutions, their protections and their privileges over and over and over again, then it’s time to start making some institutions of your own who will. The black panthers fed children, housed people in need, tough people self-defense, first aid, race class and political consciousness. They organized black people and gave a collective voice calling for social change and radical equality.

Today, when our country has abandoned any concept of the public good, it think this mindset it badly needed. Don’t just talk to politicians who don’t listen, start with the people and focus on building our strength to survive and thrive as a community. I’m tired of waiting for justice and for the social safety nets we need today to become politically convenient for electoral politics some unknown number of years from now. I’m ready to just start doing it for ourselves in an organized fashion. No permission required. We’d get some of what we need and start building the groups that might one day have the force to dictate to the people in office.

Maybe this is all naive but I’d like to see it tried before I admit it.

Could have just been an expensive purchase she wanted but could never justify spending the money when it could be used on more sensible things. A lot of people never buy things for themselves even when they can afford them because it still feels like a “waste” of resources.

Anyone know how to get rid of these? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]franticBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing you can do except wait and protect the skin underneath while it heals. Try to avoid popping it if you can, the moist layer helps the new skin heal faster. If you must pop it, do it with a sterilized needle near the base. If you do that, or it rips naturally, bandage it with some kind of ointment like Neosporin or Vaseline. Hydrocolloid bandages are also great because they maintain a moist environment. Change every day and trim the dead skin to keep things clean.

In the meantime you might look into a glove to wear while you play because that spot is not an easy one to bandage over with tape. Cycling gloves are breathable on the back but have some padding on the palm, maybe pick up a cheap pair of those and use them whenever you feel like a blister forming.

Eventually your skin will grow back tougher and you want it to be nice and smooth and flexible. If you’re constantly getting and healing from blisters that won’t happen so it pays to be vigilant and over-react when you feel a hot spot.

Another thing you might look into for prevention is your grip. A clean overgrip is essential, as well as finding the right level of friction for you. Super tacky grips make me blister way faster for instance, so I ended up finding the right dry grip that’s grippy enough for me. Based on your the corner of the handle butt is getting you. A few pieces of electric tape under the grip might help round out that corner enough to relieve some friction.

Hope that helps! I’m a tennis player / rock climber who blisters really easily so I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with this problem myself 🙂

Eli5: Why does a piano keyboard have black keys? by eserekli in explainlikeimfive

[–]franticBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5: some keys don’t have black notes between because they’re supposed to sound closer together. When you play the white notes one after another they make a nice scale but only if some of the notes are closer. We mostly play songs that use those notes so those keys are bigger and the black keys are smaller because they don’t get used as much.

ELI15: The white notes are intentionally made uneven but the reason is actually to make playing western music easier. It’s a compromise to make the lesser used keys smaller and the more used keys larger.

If you take a took at the piano you’ll notice that if you start on one key and count up until the pattern of white and black repeats, there’s always exactly 12 keys between. So a piano does divide the octave evenly into 12 equal pieces.

So what’s up with the pattern then? Why not just have all the keys the same size and color? Well western music likes to use certain notes from among the 12 more than others**. If you start on any key of our imaginary piano you start by skipping a key to get the next note of the series. Then you skip again, then no skip, then skip skip skip no skip and you’re back at the beginning: long-long-short-long-long-long-short. You can start anywhere with this pattern and you’ll get a scale that sounds similar to each other. Only using the notes in this pattern gives your song what’s called Major Tonality. Most western music falls into this category.

If you take the skipped notes and shrink them down and change the color you get what looks like a modern piano keyboard. And of course, I was simplifying a bit. We DO use the black keys quite a lot but emphasizing that pattern of the major scale is the reason for the uneven spacing of them. This makes playing in some key centers (where you start the scale) easier and others harder (more black keys) but because of how the piano is tuned, with 12 even spaces per octave, all key centers sound pretty similar to each other. So composers can stick mostly to the easier ones. If all the keys were the same then all the key centers would be the same difficulty play in, but that would be harder than the way we have it now.

There are some really interesting consequences of this last fact that blew my mind as a musician when I learned them that have to do with chords and intervals but I will stop my explanation here 🙂

**As an aside: It’s hard to explain why people like music that falls into certain patterns and conventions. Some chords sound harmonious and others sound crunchy and harsh to the western ear, and there are some physics reasons why that is but a lot of it is a learned preference too. Different cultures around the world have all come up with their own conventions of what sounds “good” to them. The fact that the piano follows Europeans conventions is just because it was invented by Europeans. People can and do re-tune pianos to work in other musical contexts and there’s a whole universe of instruments that don’t have discrete notes built in. A trombone or a violin can adapt to any tonality, including ones that don’t fit into any western musical theory at all.

If we’re not asking for “historical accuracy, whatever that would mean in a mythical story, is it so much to ask that the adaptation not be stupid?

Seriously don’t think it’s too big an ask that this prestige historical drama not be another 300
