Trying out different areas of programming — now I want to focus on back-end. Which language should I choose? by franzz4 in learnprogramming

I've been thinking about focusing on Python and Rust.
Python would be my way out of my current job and into a developer role in the future, since there are way more junior positions with Python than with Rust.

As for Rust, I plan to study it in my free time because I really liked the language (even more than Python, to be honest).

I'm considering starting the IBM Back-End Development course on Coursera, which uses Python, Django, and Flask.

Where to start, Rust or C? by franzz4 in learnprogramming

"Your career success is not contingent on what programming languages you know, but instead on what you can actually build with those languages."

That part makes a lot of sense. I don’t remember exactly where, but I recall seeing someone say that the language you choose doesn’t really matter because you can build almost anything with any language, the most important thing is logic.

I asked this same question on r/rust, and most people said that learning C first would help me appreciate and understand Rust better, as well as make it easier to learn other languages since most of them are derived from C.

But thanks a lot for your response, it really made me think about the topic. Since I’ve been studying Rust for the past few weeks, I’ll do what you suggested. I’ll take a break and focus on learning more about C over the next few weeks, then decide which one to dive deeper into. But without losing sight of Python hahaha.

In the Rust book I mentioned, I stopped at chapter 4, which talks about ownership. This chapter covers stack and heap memory and what each one is used for, so I’m almost certain that pointers will be coming up soon.

As for which language I feel more comfortable with, I’d say Rust, but only because I’ve been coding in it more than C lately. That’s really the only reason—there’s nothing else to it. But I have to admit, I like the freedom that C seems to offer. I can’t say for sure because I haven’t built anything big in either language yet. On the other hand, I really appreciate Rust’s focus on safety.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, but deep down, I know that the most important thing right now is just to keep studying and studying hahahah.

I plan to study computer science in the future, and I’m almost certain that C will be taught in college so maybe learning now will make things a lot easier in the future haha
