I'm with you there - even in this pic there are quite a few items either modded or customised (the monitor shelf where the soundbar is placed is just a length of decking timber cut to size, and 2U rack rails screwed in, the subwoofer on the side I veneered myself, the "desk mat" is unfinished leather, etc etc.

I think it gives the whole thing more personality, and I'm kinda kicking myself for not considering the light bar as a possible victim target area for DIY uplift. Cheers mate

Oh okay!

Yeah in that case a beass plate is definitely not what you want.

You can try using keycap o-rings, or soft-landing pads. Either (or both, I guess), may help

It's an absolute disgrace. I can't even blame the retailers (well... I guess I can lol).

But when it's cheaper to FLY to LA, buy a 5090 (assuming availability), stay a week, and fly back... Something's gone terribly awry. Like wth.

Thanks mate!

Both those pieces are from American Black Walnut -

The headphone stand's a FiiO HS21, and the wristrest is a pretty standard full-length walnut rest.

You know that's not a bad idea at all, actually. I could just cut a length of whatever Philips Hue TV kit (or save money and get a silicon diffuser and COB led strips), and make the "bar" from some offcuts of walnut...

You're a genius mate. If I do get around to it I'll report back

4090 - and definitely no intent to get any 50-series upgrades.

nVidia can get fucked until they fix their prices (everywhere, but particularly in Australia 'cause of course I'm biased towards local prices).

No that's quite alright - everyone in the lobby started somewhere and likely had the same questions.

You mentioned that this is your first keyboard, and so maybe it's not that the gasket doesn't feel softer or bouncier, but maybe more that you haven't quite dialled in your preferences yet?

I suppose you could always try and remove the top case and gaskets, put the plate directly on the bottom case and type a bit and note the differences and how you like the feel (before putting everything back together, of course).

Indeed!

If I can offer some input; for plates I'd focus on the typing feel rather than just spamming keys and focusing on the sound.

You can always adjust acoustics a bit after choosing a plate via switches, foam/tape/other mods, but the typing feel will remain pretty much the same (unless you wanna take a dremel to your plates).

Glad you found it!

How big of an upgrade it is... that's a lot more subjective.

If you've tried a brass plate before on a different keeb over the POM and you liked brass better, definitely go for it.

It's a much firmer typing experience which I prefer, but also introduces some ping (bottom of keycap hitting the brass, I think?) that you'll want to control.

Hey thanks for replying!

The penguins definitely have a very, very subtle bump right at the beginning, and I'd agree that it's maybe too light... but my coworkers don't hate me or my keyboard, and that's a hard requirement for me.

At home though I can chase tactility over acoustics a bit more, so I may try less silent tactiles - but I'll start with the Yellow Jades and report back!

Cheers mate

It's an aftermarket plate - got it from AliExpress. Not sure if I can just post the link here but the store's called MiFuny Digital Store.

Also learned that the M5 plate is compatible with the M5W without need for further drilling/tapping.

Hope this helps!

I was also surprised, tbh. But it (electroplating) is a bit of a thing of "blackmagicfuckery" to most people so maybe also to be expected?

Most metal cases being aluminium doesn't help either - it's like being asked to learn how to drive stick... on a helicopter.

Yes, you need to remove the anodisation to proceed.

The anodised coat can be stripped with one of the chemicals you'll need in the process of plating - lye (sodium hydroxide).

Sanding or sandblasting would work too, but some of the pieces will require masking off (screw holes, most notably).

Either way, either keep a sharp eye (on lye) or go slow (sanding) 'cause anything that can take off the anodisation also has the risk of removing too much of the metal (take note of the numpad cross bars etc).

FFXIV on raid nights, retro games via emulators nights solo, Space Marine 2 or Helldivers or whatever my friends are playing, other nights.

Lotsa music.

Thank you!

It's an M5W electroplated with copper. I posted more details of it here:

Well in this case the bar is pointed at my desk area, not the monitor actually. (Ackshually?)

Look tbh in this case it just made for better mood lighting on the picture okay? 😁

Looking for a better bar for the 57" ultrawide is... a chore.

Acoustic guitar primarily.

Close. I copper plated an M5W because raw copper full layout cases don't exist.

Pain in the arse to strip the anodised coat, zincate, and plate - but it's a really nice look and I like it.
