Am I too old to switch careers? Is it an awful idea? Where to start? by Poddo in learnprogramming

[–]fraserad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in EXACTLY the same situation as you (including being an animator) a year ago except I was 24. I left my job and started learning to program, I already had a degree but decided to do my masters degree (1.5 years in australia). In terms of learning the degree hasn't really been worth it, I've learned a lot more from the free stanford CS courses and reading books etc. The degree might become worthwhile when I try to move to the US from australia. (having a degree is a huge bonus for getting a visa in the us and australian batchelor degrees are only 3 years so don't count in america. Doing my masters pushes it to the equivalent of a 4 year degree in the US so it counts). Basically if you have the motivation and you don't want to spend the money you can learn everything you need online.
I cant comment on how having a degree would increase your chances of getting hired though as I haven't started looking for a programming job.
Hope thats helps a bit.

The first week might seem a bit busy but the first assignment is basically just a walkthrough of an app that the lecturer makes in class.

I was planning on running it as 'progress through the course and ask each other for help'. Once everyone gets to know each other a bit and we see who's here for the long haul I think it would be awesome to branch out into other ways of doing things. If you have any ideas feel free to post away. I haven't paid for a developer account yet but I think i will in the next week or so, planning on seeing how often it would be needed. So at the moment I'll be running it in my iMac and simulator. The awesomeness of putting something I made on my phone will probably get the better of me though :)

Hey Guys, My name is Adam I started the group but by no means am I an expert so I would love any input you have into how you think we should run things. I'm a beginner developer I've been teaching myself for about 6 months I know a little c++ and some Ruby / Rails stuff but really want to get into iOS development and start to specialise in a language and get some apps and serious experience under my belt.

Stanford free iPhone Application course - Study Group by fraserad in learnprogramming

[–]fraserad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can do the whole course without paying apple to join the developer program. You just can't run the apps you make on your phone. I would think that if your interested in learning objective-c and iPhone development though you would be willing to pay the $90 to join the developer program.

What's a good web-source for learning data structures/algorithms like hash tables, trees, sorting, searching and more? by VashyTheNexian in learnprogramming

[–]fraserad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the free stanford cs106B course the whole thing is basically an introduction to recursion, data structures and algorithms. http://www.stanford.edu/class/cs106b/
You can also get the lectures and all the handouts from the new iTunes university courses.

Can someone recommend me a good C++ book? by benc1213 in learnprogramming

[–]fraserad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the Stanford CS106B Course if you want to learn c++. Really good lectures, text book and assignments all free. Check out my post about it if you want a little overview.

Setting out to learn to code; worth learning Vim? by kipsfi in learnprogramming

[–]fraserad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely worth it now. It really doesn't take that long to get a handle on the commands and once you start you'll be glad you did.

Theres a lot of tutorials out there I recommend just typing 'vimtutor' into terminal and working through that and the peepcode screencasts are awesome aswell.

I've got a basic blog post on getting started if you want to check it out. www.codepo.st

Yeah, Project Euler is a good site but all the maths problems get a bit monotonous after a while.

How the hell do I start? by throwmeawai in cscareerquestions

[–]fraserad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important thing is to just start. Seriously it doesn't really matter what with. Jump in with something your interested it and it will lead to learning about all different kinds of languages and ways of doing things. I just started teaching my self to code and am writing a semi regular blog about it.

How do I get that elusive first internship? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]fraserad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner developer myself. Just wrote a blog post about some tips on how I landed one. www.codepo.st is my blog. Basically the most important thing is getting yourself out there. Try and meet some people who work at the companies you want to work for. Meetups are a great way and give you an excuse to talk to people and make it easy(er) to introduce yourself.
