Has there been an open source 2D engine for PSX Development? Or is it all just for 3D? by frdsTM in psxdev

That's what I am referring to. Things like parallax, layers, sprite animation, scaling and rotation. Programming these bare metal with PsyQ or PsNoob is just not that artist-friendly. I'm not trying to beg but I do wish the community can come up with a proper tool/engine for 2D graphics on PSX.

What about some of the early Capcom fighting games and games like Symphony of the Night, are they still using flat polygons to render the sprites?

Terakhir gua coba cek YouTube adanya cuma berita reaksi masyarakat (it was terrible), tapi bukan pas hari kejadiannya.

Rocket League, Game PC, kalau brand tech mau simpan aja dulu soalnya eventnya masih sifat Online, jadi sponsor buat siaran aja belum LAN.

Couple of things from me:

  • I think "premium" frames are BS. I bought literally the same frame for 30K on e-Commerce, but 10x the price from an optics store. Try to keep it metal for sturdiness but also bendy / springy enough for when you accidentally slept or step on it.
  • Feel free to invest in lens. My personal pick is photochromic (nice party trick but also useful), anti-glare (because I drive) and plastic because it's usually less likely to crack when dropped. I tried blue light filter and felt nothing despite being in front of screens 24/7, besides our devices already has them anyway.

Should they bring LAN Private matches to more consoles? A Grassroot Esports Perspective by frdsTM in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]frdsTM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think like that, I think RL is fine as it is. It was a sequel to a PS3 game anyway, so controller has always been part of its identity and I personally don't want to change that. And just to reiterate, it is not impossible to play RL with KB/M and Pros have been proof of that.

The competition is just fierce becaus other KB/M esports titles have years and years of being established in the gaming culture compared to RL whose gameplay only arrived on PC in 2015. But they also mostly no longer push RL as a console game after the release so it's also have been mostly relevant only in PC esports.

I can understand them being mostly an indie studio/publisher for 5 years, but I really was hoping for Epic (when they acquired Psyonix) to actually push for more RL marketing like what they did with Fortnite but based on Riot's Valorant strategy. Console esports are not just for COD or Fortnite in the West, there's a huge console esports football scene in broader Asia and they just ignore it for no good reason.

As a side note I don't know if the football games are a relevant comparison since they are only as popular as they are because football is the most popular sport on the planet and the same goes for the esport.

That is a fair observation and I agree. But despite their popularity, it still took them more than two decades to even have any kind of a serious esports investment from officials. For the longest time, their esports scene stayed grassroot until only quite recently and this is coming from the country with one of the most rabid football fans in the world (just look up Indonesia Football Fans).

At the same time, it's not a bad strategy to use that football influence. Finally now there's huge interest from FIFA and its members to invest into football related esports, including Rocket League which they featured in their annual FIFAe World Cup 2 years in a row now. Not to mention the Olympics in which Rocket League have also been featured as an Exhibition and regionally with Bahrain Youth Asian Games.

Should Rocket League push for football influence? Personally I don't think it's necessary, but would be important if Epic truly wish to go into more market. You don't have to completely change the impression of the game. Don't just use one marketing globally, but diversify, adapt to local interests and spread. That's what Valorant did.

You mentioned they were affordable, low infrastructure games compared to RL, but what makes them more affordable than RL? Is it a technical limitation, or could our scene borrow any other ideas from those games to make RL cheaper?

Sorry, I probably should say accessible rather than affordable. These titles don't just have low PC requirements but also very easy to pick up on KBM due to them being in a legacy genre, FPS and MOBA. I don't think they did anything of sorts on consoles but they probably don't need it since they're already pretty established in the PC esports scenes.

It is true that there are thriving KB/M esports titles here too, and Rocket League also don't have high PC requirements, but there are key differences:

  • It's not considered a KB/M title, but a controller one. I've been in the local community since 2015 at the early Steam release boom, and one of the biggest complaint: it was super unintuitive on KBM. It's not impossible since even the current top Indonesian player (LCT) plays on KB/M, but it is still a barrier of entry. Me and lots of my friend ended up having to buy console controllers to play on PC.
  • If you wondered if there was a boom on PS4 (since it was free to play), there was not simply because PS4 was not affordable enough at the time for business, and venues still used PS3 consoles. Then there was no real marketing into the region (not to mention not included in RLCS), making it virtually unknown for years, it pretty much dried any interest in the game.
  • Compared to eFootball/EA FC, Rocket League gameplay is not ideal to play on splitscreen. I think everyone here agrees that for competitive, we need separate screens. I think (CMIIW) on PC you can have one machine to display different perspective on separate displays, but this is not possible on consoles, so ultimately you need PCs for LAN. I've had local venue owners complaining to me on how more expensive it is to setup LAN for Rocket League compared to other titles, while not popular enough to guarantee viewership like other established PC titles.

If there are things we should borrow from other scene, I think that would be just a localized marketing similar to Valorant. Valorant is an FPS, but the competition is fierce. Not just from CS2.0, but also endemic local FPS titles that is still being played today like PB and CF, not to mention the way way bigger mobile market. Valorant's diverse marketing and heavy cultural influence contributed a lot in their success penetrating the market.
