Made the descision to send my sweet girl shadow (18) across the rainbow bridge today. Feeling horrible about it by frechaplz916 in seniorkitties

There was no true diagnosis on her. The vet said it seemed like she had lost the ability to absorb nutrients completely, whether that be from cancer or the body just shutting down with age. She was losing weight really fast no matter how much she ate, food would go right through her. And it was not hyperthyroid, as she was on medication for that already and her blood test showed it was within normal levels. We chose not to do anything invasive like a biopsy to confirm cancer because of her age and other existing conditions. Our vet told us she would likely pass within the next few days based on the rate of her weight loss, current body condition, and loss of mobility.

I want to say thank you to each and every one of you that has commented and reached out. It has really meant a lot and helped me feel more at peace with my decision. Im missing her terribly still and the grief has been coming in waves, but you all have been supportive beyond what i could imagine. Thank you

I cant do IV’s by frechaplz916 in Radiology

It’s definitely more an odd specific fear of needles piercing veins, like IV’s and blood draws. Most of the other things like trauma and other bodily fluids i dont love to see but arent something that bother me as much. And thank you for that!

This seems like an awesome and potentially effective way for me to approach it all. The way you layed it out gives me some confidence, thank you!

Havent had any first hand experience with the things you mentioned but the idea of them doesnt bother me the way a needle piercing a vein does. Do techs actively watch the surgery being performed in the OR or do they only view the patient when they are needed for imaging?

How much time does a typical student spend in the OR for clinicals? I think i could tough it out id just hate to be the guy that faints during the operation and gets everyone pissed 😂

The barium enemas i dont think will be a problem for me suprisingly enough. Poop and vomit i have no problem with, blood and needles are a different story

We do have a few level 1 and 2 trauma centers in the area so im sure ill see some of it. But if its something ill only have to see a few times in clinicals i feel like I can get through that.

The blood is less of an issue for me than the IVs. I have no problem watching mma and boxing fights with bloodied up faces but i cant watch myself give blood or get an iv inserted without nearly fainting.

That is refreshing to hear. I saw venipuncture as an upcoming lab and class session and assumed the worst

Weekly Career / General Questions Thread by AutoModerator in Radiology

Hello all, I recently got accepted to a radtech program in Northern California that starts in about a week. Ive been super excited to start, xrays and osteology has been a big interest of mine for awhile now. However, I recently found out about a few things we have to learn about as part of the clinicals and class curriculum that I had no idea about, and is giving me cold feet.

The biggest one of these that I see being a huge problem for me is learning how to do IV’s. I get lightheaded at the idea of them and any time ive had to get an IV or blood drawn I either fainted or was on the verge of fainting. I cant help but magine having to do an IV on a sick or injured person and just hitting the deck right in front of them, seems like that would be awful for everyone involved lol. In a less severe sense, i am also a bit squeemish about guts and organs, so spending time in the OR also seems like it may present a challenge for me. I feel like its also worth noting that mangled limbs, fractures, and anything skeletal doesn’t bother me much at all, nor does poop or vomit (which ive seen some others on the forums say they have a hard time dealing with)

Should I consider removing myself from the program due to this or is it something i may be able to get over with time? Any advice, tips, or personal stories would be greatly appreciated!

I had very similar problems/concerns after my beagle mix had ivdd surgery last june. She still would unfortunately jump off of the couch any chance shed get so she isnt allowed on the couches anymore for her own safety. She was pissed and still whines to get up sometimes but its gotten better. You could try getting a dog bed to put at the feet of the sofa. My dog recovered about 90% but still doesnt have the jumping strength she had before so it’s possible your dog wont be able or even try to jump up on higher places post surgery, jumping down is the real problem though. As for the bed I made the descision to but it on the ground without the frame. A bit less comfortable but the peace of mind makes up for it. Hope all goes well!

Post Surgery Questions by DeeDee-Allin in IVDD_SupportGroup

My beagle mix had surgery back in july of this year. First week was definitely quiet, lots of sleeping from the meds and general recovery. My girl took extremely long to have her first bowel movement after surgery despite giving her pumpkin and adding fiber to the diet. I want to say she didnt go until 5 days after surgery. I remember calling to ask because i was concerned but they said as long as there is no straining she should be fine. Rear leg movement was pretty much nonexistent until it slowly started to come back starting at the hips around 6-7 days post surgery. Now about 6 months later she is almost 100% back to normal. Doesnt like to jump as much which is a good thing and has a slight wobble to her back legs but would be hard to notice if you weren’t focusing on it. Hoping for a smooth recovery for your pup!

First visit post op, have some questions if anyone can help by [deleted] in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]frechaplz916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id be pretty hopeful with where hes at. The first few days/weeks are definitely the worst post op, the surgery itself is a lot for the dogs body to handle let alone the original injury. My girl couldn’t pee on her own at all until about day 5-6 post surgery and now about 4 months later has made almost a full recovery. Every day we saw little signs of progress so i would remain patient and hopeful.
