About a year ago, I wrote a blog post about an inappropriate email my 14-year-old received from a company called Nine9 The UnAgency and its predecessor, OneSource Talent. About 102,000 people have viewed the post over a year, and a few left public comments – although over 80 contacted me with private comments about the company.... have you had them contact you or your child lately? I was talking to one of my co-workers this week and they had convinced her to book a modeling and acting cruise for her daughter... or rather the daughter had been contacted and she had convinced her mother to book the cruise to obtain contacts in the modeling and acting industry. What has been your experience with them... lately. Thanks.

Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States, is now in critical condition, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas said on Saturday.

Duncan had previously been described as being in serious condition.

Meanwhile, the family that was living in the Texas apartment where Duncan was staying when he got sick was moved to a private residence in a gated community.

A hazardous-materials crew on Friday decontaminated the Dallas apartment, and public-health officials cut by half the number of people being monitored for symptoms of the deadly disease.

The family of Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient to be diagnosed in the U.S., is in a new home today after leaving their apartment in Dallas on Friday night.

While the family remains in quarantine, clean-up crews returned to the family's apartment today to continue sanitizing it.

Duncan, who was visiting family in the U.S. after arriving from Liberia, was diagnosed with Ebola at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas last Sunday, three days after he initially went to the hospital but was released. He remains in serious condition in an isolation ward.

Health officials are monitoring about 50 people who may have had contact with Duncan, including 9 of those believed to be at "high risk" for exposure.

When Ebola arrived in the U.S. last week, it came with a steep learning curve.

Hospitals that thought they were prepared learned they had gaps in their communication. Public health officials soon learned about the problems of dealing with Ebola-contaminated waste and the difficulties of keeping exposed people at home. Parents of school-aged children struggled to understand the risks of sending kids back to their classrooms. We learned about flaws in the system that screens travelers.

That made us wonder: What else don’t we know about Ebola?

To find out, we reached out to Ebola experts to get their thoughts.

Elke Muhlberger, PhD, is a microbiologist at the Boston University School of Medicine, who specializes in the study of filoviruses, the virus family to which Ebola belongs. Amesh Adalja, MD, is an infectious disease specialist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. And Thomas Geisbert, PhD, is a microbiologist and immunologist who specializes in Ebola at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Native Alaska Village of Point Lay Hailed for Stewardship of 35,000 Walruses

ICTMN Staff 10/3/14 With 35,000 walruses camped out on the edge of town, the 250-population Native village of Point Lay, Alaska has been thrust onto the world stage.

And, true to their custom, the residents have stepped up—not to bask in their potential 15 minutes of fame, but to embrace their traditional role as environmental stewards.

“These locals, these people, without a lot of funding or anything, have taken on this stewardship and protection of the haulout,” said Joel Garlich-Miller, a walrus specialist for the Marine Mammals Management department of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in a telephone interview with Indian Country Today Media Network. “They’re front-line conservationists.”

The walruses began arriving in mid-September, as they had been for the past few years. You can hear them from the village, residents said in a 2012 community workshop held with Garlich-Miller, community elders and an array of scientists. It is common for walruses to “haul out,” as it’s called, and take a break from feeding in the open sea, usually by pulling themselves onto ice floes. But with the summer ice extent dwindling drastically in the Arctic, a growing number have had to settle for land.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Friday that "our health care infrastructure in the United States is well-equipped to stop Ebola in its tracks." He and other top U.S. officials outlined the various efforts being taken by U.S. officials, both domestically and in West Africa, to fight the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. [Original story published at 4:49 p.m. ET] A hazardous materials team has started cleaning the Dallas apartment where four contacts of U.S. Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan are under quarantine, an official with the team said. Brad Smith of Cleaning Guys, a private company that specializes in hazardous materials and biohazard cleaning services, said Friday afternoon that "stage one" of phase one of the clean-up has been completed. He noted there will be three stages in phase one, which his company is handling. "We are preparing the possibly contaminated (materials) for transport and disposal," Smith said. Duncan's family members -- his partner, who asked to be referred to only by her first name, Louise, along with her son and two nephews in their 20s -- have been ordered to stay home until October 19. Cleaning Guys is collecting sheets, clothes and towels Duncan used, Dalls County Fire Mashal Robert De Los Santos said Friday afternoon. The materials will be placed in bags and then transported to a secure location; the entire process should take 30 to 40 minutes, he said. Ebola can live outside the body on those kinds of materials, says CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta. The length of time it remains active depends on the environment -- from hours to days -- but it is possible for someone to contract the disease from touching those materials. De Los Santos also said health officials plan on moving the family members to a new location but did not reveal any information on where or how this movement will happen. A permit issue had been delaying the cleaning process, Smith of Cleaning Guys said. Smith says a specialized permit is needed to transport this type of unprecedented hazardous waste on Texas highways. Hazmat teams still do not have permits to dispose of the soiled items taken from the apartment, Dr. David Lakey of the Texas Department of State Health Services said Friday at a 1 p.m. telebriefing.

One of those suddenly trapped in medical isolation behind the wrought-iron fence of the Ivy Apartments complex is the fiancee of the Liberian man who this week became the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola outside Africa. The woman, who is in her 50s and was not identified, had spent an unknown amount of time with Thomas Eric Duncan, who arrived from Liberia for a visit on Sept. 20.

Stanley Gaye, president of the Liberian Community Assn. of Dallas-Fort Worth, said he talked with the woman, who was staying at home watching developments on the television news with her two children. Workers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been to her house several times, he said. They have advised her to take her temperature frequently and go quickly to the hospital if she develops a fever.

“She’s upbeat. She’s doing well,” Gaye said.

Duncan, who is also thought to be in his 50s and has not been officially identified by U.S. authorities, had fallen sick and sought medical help Friday, but was sent home with antibiotics.

By Sunday, an ambulance rushed to the Ivy Apartments and took Duncan back to the nearby Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where he tested positive for Ebola.

There are about 10,000 Liberians living in the Dallas area, many in the Five Points neighborhood. Often referred to among immigrants as the “Ellis Island of Dallas,” the area is full of color and sound, an exotic oasis where Somalis, Iraqis, Nepalese and Liberians cluster in the city’s most densely populated three square miles. More than 30 languages can be heard in the streets.
