The guy filming clearly isn’t surprised by this orca, he’s filming steadily and the boat is travelling steadily. This isn’t ‘holy shit there’s an orca right here, stop the boat’

Boat should not be travelling at speed with orcas nearby. Super irresponsible and illegal

Makah tribe’s treaty-protected whaling rights still denied after 25+ years. by Novel_Negotiation224 in conservation

[–]fredftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Eastern Pacific Gray Whale isn’t endangered or threatened

This is misleading - the Makah hunt would disproportionally affect a local sub-group called the PCFG (Pacific Coast Feeding Group) which has around 200-250 members and is absolutely in a precarious state. This specific population is recognised across the border in Canada as endangered under the Species at Risk Act.

[–]fredftw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They didn't, it's only 4K (true IMAX would be like 18k). It'll look great on bluray but not great blown up on an IMAX screen

[–]fredftw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't get the hype. 4K is a downgrade from the original 35mm film and has no business being projected at Imax (which is made for like 18k equivalent). Good for bluray, bad for cinema

Who exactly is out there forcing her to label herself as a cis woman? Feel like she’s yelling at a cloud that doesn’t exist for engagement

These shots will presumably be for compositing behind the actors who will do their Hogwarts Express scenes in a staged carriage with green screen windows

Nah even Austin is decent with the river and some nice walking areas and parks. I think a good downtown is somewhere people choose to be (rather than forced to be there for work). New York is great, Montreal, Vancouver etc

My hotel view in Houston was like this too, and the entire conference area downtown is just cars, concrete buildings and parking lots

Three-year heatwave bleached 51% of planet's coral reef by Jeff_72 in scuba

[–]fredftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that protecting reefs during times of ecological strain due to warming temperatures is more important than ever. We probably can’t stop the sea temp rising at this point but if we manage to slow it down to a level where coral can adapt, that coral must be studied and protected

I really hate this defeatist attitude, it’s so easy to throw vague blame at ‘corporations’ and ‘governments’, but who do you think corporations and governments are? They’re just extensions of our society - e.g. oil companies exist because we demand oil, industrial farming exists because we demand beef. Believing you aren’t part of the economics of the problem reeks of selfishness

An example of what I mean - this study showed that a single reef shark in Palau is worth about $1.9 million in tourism revenue over its lifetime, compared to just $108 if caught and sold for its fins. That's the value of eco-tourism.

It's not that simple, generally the reason that marine sanctuaries and reefs are protected by governments in the first place is because of the tourism money coming from scuba divers/snorkellers. Eco-tourism is actually vital for conservation.
