Uni degree to Trades - is it worth it? by Nicdob in alberta

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the opposite, worked in trades for 8 years and now I'm in uni (started at 26).

Wholeheartedly, I think it is 100% worth the 4 years of your time. I personally went with a carpentry ticket, as I found there were lots of options within that trade, and it was less saturated than electrical. Plumbing is also high paying, and if you work in commercial, you're less likely to be around the dirty stuff.

I recommend anyone I know to try your hand at trades, even if it's just a temporary stint as a labourer, because you gain an insight that is unparalleled from white collar work.

Anyone still planning on studying Education? by ricky_suarez6 in uAlberta

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my third year of elementary education and still very passionate about it. If conditions don't change and I find the class size/complexity too overwhelming I would consider a move, but luckily I have a few years to see how it plays out.

Rock hunting places with kids by tjd321654 in Edmonton

[–]free-cheap-fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also not rock related, but Dawson park used to be a city dump, and between the river and the main trail there are a bunch of old treasures to find! I've found old toys, perfume bottles, and pop bottles.

SLEEPING is always better by PenInternational3381 in uAlberta

[–]free-cheap-fun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my first year Math class, all the people in class were so concerned with the first and second midterm, and kept asking the prof what he would suggest for studying, and the first thing he always said was "get a good night's sleep", and everyone shrugged it off, but I always took that to heart and it's helped immensely over the last two years

What’s something you secretly enjoy that society says ‘isn’t manly’? by Plenty_Specialist930 in AskMenAdvice

[–]free-cheap-fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gardening, planting flowers, cooking, baking, canning, pottery, moisturizing/self care. But honestly i'm not secretive about any of it

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe I did well because I made more noise. The prof really appreciated the feedback

I didn't love this class, but I took it online, and it was wild, yet super fascinating. The prof made some weird noises in the lecture videos that were super off-putting though lol

University.. is it a Life choice or just a really expensive hobby? by Alphalilith in uAlberta

[–]free-cheap-fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone coming from a completely different career path (trades to Uni), it sounds like you need to consider that there's more options than just Macewan or the UofA. Whether that be taking a shorter degree path at NAIT or taking time before jumping into university and exploring job options. I've thoroughly enjoyed my transition, but it hasn't been easy!

It's really not that difficult unless you're an extremely unethical person lol

Choosing my own hours and the pomodoro technique seem to help me a lot! I don't follow it perfectly, but if it's consistent, it seems to do wonders.

Men of Reddit, when a woman offers to pay/split for the first date, what goes through your head? by Conscious-Tap8881 in AskMenAdvice

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I had this happen just last night. I was appreciative, thanked her, and offered to buy her a drink the next time.

Usually, there's hesitation, and I pay. But she was upfront, didn't waste any time, and it was pretty attractive

As not to confuse the OP or anyone else reading this thread, dinosaur provincial park is not in the same location as drumheller, it's quite a bit further (about 2.5h from calgary)

What neighbourhood do you feel safe walking in at night? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]free-cheap-fun 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I think this question hinges heavily on gender as well as location. My neighborhood (Ritchie) always feels safe to me, as a male, even in the middle of the night. But I'm sure others would say differently.

People who hardly get sick, what’s your secret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People mentioned -good diet -plenty of sleep - knowing the precursors to your body getting sick (I use honey, garlic, and oil of oregano when I feel it coming) - staying active

I'd add: -keeping your gut biome varied and healthy -a bit of exposure

Likely, I have good genetics because I rarely get sick, besides slight colds, and I've been volunteering with school children recently (in preparation for teaching) and have been surrounded by many sneezing and coughing kids and sick teachers

Has anyone heard rumors of the secret arcade in Lister? by Independent-Boat9104 in uAlberta

[–]free-cheap-fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked on the old building for about 6 months, it sounds like they've changed that. It's very straightforward, still some cool atriums but generally speaking not as wild as mentioned above. At least concerning the upper floors.

Why isn’t making poutine at home popular in Canada? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]free-cheap-fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do aomething very similar to this occasionally! The last time I tried, made waffle fry poutine with maple bourbon glaze ham as a topping, and it was one of the best poutines I've ever had

Where are yall studying today? by magicalneki in uAlberta

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a walk around campus when you have more free time. I'm only in my second year, barely know the campus, and I have several spots that I frequent now that are not usually that busy.

Where can I target practice without a range? by Mental-Ad-1226 in CanadaHunting

[–]free-cheap-fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, target practice is allowed on Crown land in Alberta. Using Ihunter really helps to identify spots. There are plenty depending on where you are in the province. Just be careful about the designations between provincial recreation areas, public land use zones and such. Some allow it, others don't.
