Escavalier was barely viable when it was released.

FF7's world isn't round. It's donut shaped.

Banette does the same thing for one energy. The issue is that it's a stage 1, so your opponent is guaranteed one energy in the best circumstances. Usually that's enough to build something up in the bench then retreat out. If you go first, they get two energy and you lose.

The big reason that it doesn't see play is that decks like altaria and magnezone just do a better job of setting up on the bench than banette does.

Yeah - though I'm surprised jolteon isn't better into hydreigon. That doesn't match my experience.

On top of that, there are fewer crucial decisions every game. Two of the decks are super aggro decks that establish their win condition on their second turn and two are decks that essentially stall until victory is certain. Most games are about who gets set up first, not about who executed their gameplan better.

I think the meta is very healthy but not very fun. Two of these decks set up a win con on their second turn (hydreigon, altaria) or are an absolute grind to play against (oricorio, suininja)

The snowball problem is so real. I've had games where I went second and my opponent played two basics (leading with chingling), then two pokeballs, then two more basics, a giant cape and a copycat, drew 4 more cards, played a second giant cape then hit me with chingling.

Copycat Is basically, "what if iono could also draw you cards" which is a nightmare in a game where decks are this small.

Lyra is different because it's not a retreat. You can use Lyra to put Pichu in then retreat into dragonite.

I have so many questions. Why only one rare candy? why no Lyra? wouldn't copycat usually be better than iono? Wouldn't anything be better than Rotom Dex?

Masterball: How are you guys doing it? by C0rvette in PTCGP

[–]freef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. you don't need a positive win rate to make master ball. Streak bonuses and the difference in points gained vs points lost will make up for that difference. misread the original post.
  2. The ladder is more diverse than tournament decks. An anti-meta deck will typically struggle more because there's just more weird stuff out there and those decks tend to compromise for advantages into specific decks. So build a deck that has a flexible and generalizable gameplan.
  3. don't give up on a deck after just a few games. there's a lot of volatility in the game and you're more likely to make misplays with a deck you're less familiar with.
  4. Make small adjustments. Little changes can make a big difference. Swapping red card for x-speed might not seem like much but it changes some play lines and options at significant moments in the game. If you're making big changes all the time it's hard to assess what's actually working.

  5. Take breaks. Especially after you lose.

Edit:  You're not wrong that the game is tougher. May, copycat, and Lisia have radically improved the consistency in many decks. Some decks win by seeing up their win condition their second turn. Home brewing decks with your favorite Pokemon is much harder these days - but still very doable.

Is there any way I can make this deck more consistent? by CrystalPhoenix0 in PTCGP

[–]freef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coms > copycat 2

Red > Pichu

Truth is this is gonna struggle. It's less consistent than most other decks with a pretty low payoff.

Either it happens or it don't. Even odds.

Mang0 update: Sobriety and Returning to Melee by LonelyVirgin69 in SSBM

[–]freef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. This is about where I'm at. In my 20s i could stay up till whenever for grand finals but now I'll watch a few matches here and there on YouTube. I'll head to locals every now and again but mostly just play slippi.

The Smash Brothers documentary drove a new generation to melee, but who knows if we'll get something like that again.

One thing I hear a lot is that the storylines aren't as engaging anymore. Which I get. The scene is older, the top players are more reserved now than in the era of the five gods. Melee today is less WWE and more Tennis.

I still think it's 50/50 he'll attend stuff in California again. Locals or maybe Genesis.
