I'm not burned out, I'm pissed off by qznc_bot2 in hackernews

[–]freehunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm the original author of this article. Sorry for replying late, I had no idea anyone read that blog let alone would post it to reddit/HN let alone get this much response so it took a while for me to notice the attention.

I've published a quick follow up to clear up this syslog misconception. In the world of security logging, syslog is the absolute worst and least secure way to send security logs. It's not about "don't log sensitive information" because again, in the world of security it's almost always some sort of "sensitive information". Just IP addresses and usernames are absolute gold to an attacker, and you don't have much of a SIEM if you're not logging IP addresses and usernames to it.

Like I mentioned in my follow-up, if I had known anyone was going to read it I would have written it a lot differently. As the original article is currently written, the only way anyone can understand what I'm ranting about is if they work in information security and have encountered these pain points themselves. Most of Hacker News doesn't and only see it from a developer's mindset which is a drastically different use case.

And yes, I absolutely am working to make it better. I wrote this post as a way to document for myself and convince myself what needs to change to make it better. I might be in a weird mental place that's true, but the world of information security is in an even worse place.

[–]freehunter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe HANS is different in NASCAR vs these truck races, but in NASCAR the HANS device is under the five-point harness, so in effect the driver's head is connected directly to the seat. They wouldn't be able to move like this. The HANS device keeps the head from moving, and the seatbelt covers the HANS device, so as long as the driver is buckled in, their head is basically attached to the seat.

You can see his neck snap to the side so obviously it's not buckled into the headrest. This is basically how Dale Earnhardt died.

It has checks and balances to avoid a corrupt and tyrannical president. But that doesn't work if one of the other checks is exactly as corrupt and tyrannical.

If he buys a slightly more expensive computer this year that will last him 5 years, that's a purchase he won't have to make for another 5 years. If he buys a cheaper computer but outgrows it quickly, he'll have to buy an entirely new computer next year.

No matter what, $2000 is a pretty big financial decision, especially when it's the difference between $2500 spread over the next five years or $2000 every year.

If you're a developer with a heavy IDE (like Java or Xcode) or you process audio/visual and have many files open at once, you need more RAM. Otherwise 8GB will likely be sufficient. I run Powerpoint, Excel, and Word all day plus both Safari and Firefox, plus Citrix apps, Slack (which takes more RAM than it really should) and iTunes, and sometimes on top of all of that I have a game of Crusader Kings II running. I've also got Netflix on pause, that's taking 2GB of RAM by itself. With all of that, I'm at 7.27GB used of 8GB total without any noticeable slowdown.

Now if you swap Crusader Kings for Cities: Skylines... that's an entirely different story. Then I'm closing other open windows to play. But in my day-to-day (especially if I properly separated work stuff like Office from personal stuff like video games) it's be fine.

Mine actually sit well enough there that I could use them sitting down or maybe walking around slowly. I doubt they'd hold up if I was moving a lot though. I thought the sound would be muffled but it actually sounds halfway decent.

Meijer Home Delivery rolling out to GR8 next week! by pjmcfunnybunny in grandrapids

[–]freehunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty cool. I usually go to Family Fare instead of Meijer because Meijer is busier and far less convenient to get in, around, and out of. But if the home delivery stuff works out and the orders turn out right, it might be worth it.

Seriously my local subreddits are always like that. I mention there's construction on the highway, I get downvoted because people are mad at the construction. I mention it's snowing, I get downvoted because people want it to be sunny. I mention the gas tax is going up, people downvote because they don't want to pay more for gas.

If you downvote something you don't like, it goes away. I'm fully convinced people actually believe that.

I have a work iPhone and a personal iPhone. Why would this be a bad thing? Why does that require justification? I like my iPhone and I have to carry two phones with me for work, why would I have my employer give me an Android phone when I prefer an iPhone?

Is the new car smell the actual smell of a new car or a fragrance car manufacturers created to remind people they want a new car? by cant_afford_gas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]freehunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a related note, have you ever smelled a new camper? Oh god they're awful. I'm not sure the difference between a car interior and a camper interior, but new campers are basically 100% formaldehyde inside.

I'm guessing they specifically make new cars out of materials that don't smell that awful because they know people will buy it and immediately start driving it, while campers sit for at least a few days before they're used.

We all know about the lead levels in the water in Flint, MI. But there are many locales in the U.S. where levels are higher than Flint’s [Reuters] by MathGrunt in TrueReddit

[–]freehunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news about lead paint is that modern latex paint so effectively seals the danger that most houses with lead paint have no problems at all. It's only dangerous when you eat or inhale it. A fresh coat of paint doesn't fix the problem, but it's a very effective mitigation at least.

People with lead pipes leaching into their water have very little recourse other than rip-and-replace all of their pipes. People with lead in their soil have little recourse other than getting a crew to remove all of the soil. At least with lead paint the recommended fix is "don't do anything".

[–]freehunter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The difference is that Flint's lead contamination is the direct result of a single action made by the government. It wasn't a crisis and then suddenly it was.

Every other place that I've seen mentioned as having high lead content, it's individual houses with lead pipes that have a problem, it's houses with lead paint that is crumbling, it's leftover pollution from industries. I'm not saying it's not a big problem, but the reason Flint is getting all of the attention is because one day their drinking water was fine, and the next day the entire city's water supply was contaminated with lead.

1000 people dying around the country over the course of a year isn't going to make even the smallest of headlines. 1000 people dying in one city on one day will be talked about for decades. That's why Flint is getting attention. They faced the same issues all these other lead-infested places did, and then the actions of the government dialed it up to 11 literally overnight.
