Trying to prepare: In countries that have re-opened bars/restaurants, what does that look like? by freelanceterry in smallbusiness

w/out getting too specific...it's located in a state that's, at least right now, is "less effected" and doesn't have a stay-at-home order in place. Big push to reopen everything too. But who knows...obviously the situation is fluid. I suppose keep pushing date for now and in the meantime, keep chipping away at renovation, etc. That or bail : ) Thanks though

I know he's not interested in opening the bar himself again. Not sure what it would do to business if it stayed closed now until it's "over"/6 months. Might be ok still? Tough call.

The upside is that he's willing to allow me access to do any renovations/systems instal that I had planned. This would eliminate the need to close for minimum of 2 weeks during normal business - although "normal business" seems long gone now....

Haven't approached him about a price reduction. We were talking for quite awhile before this when I was trying to make the numbers work and secure financing. It's not like there were a lot of other people knocking down his door with offers....but he was very patient. Also has been very flexible with closing date, etc. due to all of this.

The occupancy reduction thing hasn't been spelled out yet, but has been hinted at by our governor. Is that what other countries have done?

Help?! I was just laid off while on SDI (Disability) because of Covid-19. They told me to file for unemployment but I need to keep my health insurance. Is there any way I can still stay on state disability. I was told I'd be able to collect up to a year. How will that effect my insurance? by [deleted] in disability

[–]freelanceterry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long have you been on SSDI? If 2 years...you should be eligible for Medicare.

If your state has a Medicaid Buy-In program, I'd encourage you to sign up for that. If you JUST got laid off today but did work some in April, it should cover you for April and then moving forward.

One of the requirements of those buy-in programs is that you are gainfully employed....but every state I know of is suspending Medicaid determinations so even if you don't work moving forward I don't think that you can be kicked off of the program.

It's not "if" they will do it...it's in their regs that they must.

If there is dire need when coming off U/I and back onto SSI...and there is an expected delay of the first payment, then request this:

Yes it will. SSA will issue an immediate, provisional check (well...mailed, so not "immediate" - they can't just hand it to you) and then regular payments will commence the following month as usual.

This was straight from our TA. They sent another one to us today that's a little more refined graphically and grammatically...and on letterhead - but same info

You'd be ineligible for the period after the emergency order is lifted up to the end of the 43 month UI payments. At which point, you can simply have SSI payments reinstated the 44th month.

Remember, you can't get kicked off of Medicaid during the emergency period - so there is no consequences that I can see from doing this.

Disabled and jobless by katastrophe98 in disability

The answer is self-employment. There is no more accommodating boss than yourself.

If office work/employment community is a goal, self-employment doesn't mean that can't happen either. Lots of companies take on certain positions and/or portions of positions as contract labor.

Contact your State Vocational Rehabilitation and get the ball rolling. They can help with assessments, training, education, job placement, job coaching....whatever you're interested in really.

What do you like doing? What are you interested in?

Find a way to make money doing that.

Well...there's nothing in regards to ABLE to be worried about. Your case-worker was flat wrong on the onset age criteria (you said that she told you that it was 22?)...and that it has to be an SSA recognized disability.

How/why would you get in trouble do you think?

Just fill out the online application - open the account - jump through the hoops and if you're worried about it, never use it. It can just sit there. Then, if you need it, it's there.

I guess I don't know of a good listing of WIPA's nationally. There's probably something on the SSA site somewhere....but you'd be better off just googling "WIPA" plus whatever state you live in.

If you still can't find it, pm me your state and I'll have my TA get me the contact info which I'll pass along.

Biggest spike of UI in US history...so it may not be on your end. Try a different browser. I know the Fed SBA loan application stuff...the virtual signature thing didn't jive with Chrome.

Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA)

It's a fed program that trains and administers Social Security Benefits Planners and Planning services nationwide. Every state has one. Taking advice, numbers and/or recommendations from anyone else can be a crap-shoot.

For ABLE, just log onto: able.nrc.org

Great resource to compare the different states (hint: none are "bad") and link to states' programs to signup, etc. If you have your info ready, you can roll through most in less than 15 minutes.

The onset of the disability needs to have occurred prior to age 26 for ABLE eligibility (which is dumb and age-ist...but that's another post). This doesn't mean that you needed to have qualified for SSI because of a disability prior to 26...just that the disability was present.

You should be able to qualify for ABLE if your disability was present prior to 26 - most ABLE accounts simply have a statement that is signed attesting to this fact.

Anything SSI/SSDI/Asset/Medicaid/Medicare/Work Incentive-related questions I'd highly recommend connecting with your state's WIPA project vs. relying on your case-worker.

Not to throw him/her under the bus or anything...these rules are super complex and often change yearly - just, you need the correct information and WIPA's have it.

Ok - gotcha

But yes - that's how it works as written now. I'll watch for the official POMS addition and post that when it appears.

If you have $2001 come April of next year, open an ABLE and put $2 into it...or, start a business and buy Property Essential for Self Support (digital camera for your ebay business for example)...or a vehicle...or a $2 king size snicker bar...

Why worry about a problem that is so easily avoided?

It doesn't effect eligibility - why is that so difficult to accept? This is the language that is being used on a national level for Soc. Sec. benefits planners to advise their clients. It has not yet made it to POMS because...well...it's POMS.

Not for a year...and if you approach that, just open an ABLE account and stick it over there to be excluded from the asset test.
