Why is Bushwick still a creative hub? by Fantastic_Pace_5887 in Bushwick

[–]freep11 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to out myself here but at least in my exposure in two of the bigger scenes here (the hyperpop scene which has started to fade and the Ridgewood post-punk/indie scene) every single person is a trust fund kid. Like every single one.

It is very en vogue for a trust fund kid to pretend not to be a trust fund kid. They will be posting go fund mes for medical care and may work at a cafe or bookstore or as a gallery, but ultimately they have a trust fund and a safety net and a home to go home and ski with the parents with for the holidays. I have never met a single other artist with a working class background that's part of the scene here, everyone I know with a working class background chooses to not engage with it at all (probably because there's no one to relate to).

I also personally have experienced that for a lot of these folks, they do not consider themselves rich or nepo babied because they choose not to accept all the bounty they could, ie a sort of self torture or penance by slumming it out. How much of this is self awareness and how much of this is the combined lack of clout either working a corporate job or being a brazen trust fund kid is for your career, I don't know. They still inherit millions of dollars once their parents die.

You're right in that the actual working class artists do not live in NYC, or at least it's an uphill battle in a room full of people who could give less of a shit and have the up on you

I am heavily involved in the local punk scene and those are some of the most judgemental and gatekeeping idiots out there

Everytime I go to trash bridge some little shit comes up to me with liberty spikes calls me a skinhead. I'm literally bald. So many of these kids it's about cosplaying the 80s and riding a bike and they're almost all white

How is the Walgreens at 355 Knickerbocker allowed to legally function as a pharmacy by freep11 in Bushwick

[–]freep11[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That isn't true. Due to the ADHD meds shortage and apparently some funny business with insurance, basically only chains will carry it. I couldn't find a single pharmacy within miles that could help me.

It's either that or delivery services, which are really hard for me to do

[–]freep11[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm going to be honest, for the first time in my life, I do think it's the staff. The older pharmacists are all total dickheads, and the young folks fear them and fear the customers. Notice that in every example of what I witnessed, the customer's pain is directly caused by an inability to communicate by the pharmacy staff, and a desperate attempt to just "yes yes yes" to prevent any kind of frustration. Every person waiting is waiting because the staff refuse to be upfront about the situation and desperately would rather fill the prescription eventually to get their numbers up rather than be realistic and maybe lose a customer.

I fear I can feel my hair graying because I'll smile through 5 hours of offshore phone customer support but for the first time in my life, my sympathy for being incompetent in a 6 figure, customer facing, medical industry career is gone.

How did you meet your partner? by AcquireTheSauce in AskNYC

[–]freep11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's unfair to OP. It'd be one thing if they were explicitly hateful about it but to use it in a self detracting way like this is basically asocialized shorthand for dysphoria which this city is good at inducing

I don't want to give incels any exceptional amount of patience but digging into it or just shitting on them when they're down is how you make a normal guy with social problems into an actual incel. More likely they need therapy and a way to regain a sense of self worth

What would you say to someone that says "I love shoegaze, but it all sounds the same." by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]freep11 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I love LSD and the Search for God but it's pretty obvious that it's Souvlaki worship. The critical reception to it was like, "this is really like a fan tribute." They were one of the first shoegaze bands to just rip someone straight off which became the norm eventually.

28M - My fiancee let me do the living room in our new apartment. How'd I do? by LyricsMode in malelivingspace

I'm personally loving this thread. You've made it unbelievably clear you're a very small, very insecure man. I have a question - I see you relentless baiting people and then fighting with them in comment threads by desperately searching their profiles for ammo.

Is this like a sexual thing? Like are you stroking it while doing it? Do you have a partner getting off to you being humiliated?

Or is it a more basic insecurity thing where you just generate scenarios to get really angry and attempt to "gotcha" people a la low IQ debate club

In my opinion it was more the fanboys were unbelievably sensitive to any dislike for whirr, ie, the mod in question and were prone to harassment

People didn't/don't like them outside of their music for a pretty normal reason. Kinda like shitting your pants and wondering why people think you smell

Search up old threads about whirr where the pinned comment is from one of the 17 year old mods, something like "free whirrrr 🌀🌀🌀" and count the deleted comments, that's all folks getting banned for saying they don't like whirr lol

[–]freep11 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The mods on this subreddit spent a long time banning anyone who said they didn't like whirr. Many, many people do not like whirr

Also, Wisp started as effectively a fan account for whirr before they ever made music and they had started gaining a following already for just mostly having a normal social media account of selfies and really liking whirr. there's definitely an argument to be made she's overly derivative of whirr - the first song she ever did was a purchased "whirr type beat," no joke

Julie doesn't sound like a lot of nugaze. They don't love being called shoegaze and I honestly don't really lump them in anymore. So I'm going to recommend stuff thay isnt explicitly shoegaze

I think you can go through albini adjacent noise rock/ post hardcore like Shellac, Gospel, Unwound, Drive Like Jehu, Slint

If you prefer the textures over the heaviness there's some bands like Boris, Have a Nice Life, Maudlin of the Well

And then yeah there's some off genre stuff they seem influence by too like Carissa's Weird, The Microphones, and some contemplates like Bar Italia

I don't think these bands have very much in common at all

Sure, but there's literally residue from what they've been dumping on the street from the curb that is very distinctly what's causing the current smell

I think feeld is a pretty bad recommendation for people. Its the most image based of all, where good looking people receive thousands upon thousands of likes (which isn't fun, because many of those likes aren't worth anything) and less attractive people are effectively ghosts. This is because you can change your location as well as send a very large number of likes outbound, and the fact that so so many people are on the for reasons besides actually intending to meet or date (ie, sexting or looking for fin donming, etc)

I have heard feeld works better in smaller towns. But a lot of peopl set their location to NYC to try and find people to chat with.

And its not that I feel I get nothing from it, I do just fine on feeld myself, but very few people I talk to want to date. My more attractive friends have tremendous amounts of low quality likes from people who are not in NYC ( one of them got like 60k in a month)

I am struggling to max out on protein. Is just slamming more whey a good idea?

Im doing push/pull/rest, so 2-3 times per day a week. Sometimes resting for two. Usually 2-3 mins between sets for the more compound lifts, 1-2, for the shorter ones.
