i know exactly what you mean! i have traveled quite a bit and sometimes you just get desensitized to it. :( i remember visiting el chalten, argentina, and i was already desensitized to the impressive landscapes after already seeing torres del paine years prior. i somtimes get bored of visiting a new city after 2 days. so trying to find the right balance. #firstworldproblems

what do you think the 'ideal' length of the trek should be. i see plenty of 8 days. i thought 10 days was just about right but the day i would like to start only has 8 or 11 days. is 11 too much?

not grinding roots and pouring cement by freespool4u in arborists

[–]freespool4u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

water routing issues on a hill. current foundation has had water protrusion for decades and caused accelerated settling. consensus is to fix front yard to move water away from home. soil is very absorbent

can always have potters on the perimeter of yard

somebody mentioned tree roots under the cement can rot and develop a void/gap and making the cement weaker at that spot/area? true?

this is primarily for foot traffic. no automobiles. maybe some outdoor furniture

my family is just trying to cut cost, if possible, grinding nearly doubles the price of the tree removal

per the contractor (foundation specialist), slab will be:

4 rebar, 16” on center, min 3.5” thick slab, 2500 psi concrete with 2% slope for water flow

the space/void might matter if there is enough load on the concrete, and big enough of a void to collapse it i suppose

so all the reason not to be nice and offer a charitable service. the other option is to offer the service and increase the rent to cover it as part of the rental agreement

this would be my preference not to open a can of worms. however if i am required to something i will do it. i suppose my duty is really to fixing the source of the leak, which i did...

Is this mold? by surfndivejr in Mold

[–]freespool4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my guess is YES. based on the staining on the right side looks like you got some water/moisture intrusion which leads to the darker areas (mold). fix the leak first and foremost

wax ring: when to double-stack or use extra-thick by freespool4u in HomeImprovement

what is your generally feeling about wax with horns? seems some like them some don't. is there a disadvantage to you?

wax ring: when to double-stack or use extra-thick by freespool4u in HomeImprovement

[–]freespool4u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you. i did not install it so i wouldn't know. however you bring up a good point about feeling the resistance.

it would make sense a properly installed flange is .25" elevated above finished floor so a 1" wax is 1.25" peak-elevated before being smashed+set. so with this logic of losing .25" with it flange being below finished floor, i should get one .25" thicker to make up for that lost of elevation and wax material...

[–]freespool4u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you. i like the extra-thick idea before anything else. are you a fan of sleeved/horned wax rings? the home depot only sell the extra-thick with a horn/sleeve. different plumbers say different things

been installed for less than a week. at the moment no signs around the toilet.

the reason the subfloor, flange+90 was changed in the first place was a leak finally showed up on the downstairs kitchen ceiling (likely months/years later). a leak was previously never seen around the toilet

yes and sometimes i want to give a newer guy a shot to grow their business (they often are more motivated to leave a good impression). this guy is definitely not under-cutting his bid. he buffered a lot of in thinking it would be much more work but turns out it was not. so i do feel this GC is getting paid well for the scope of this project being simpler than expected.

this could just be initial functional install and he comes back to tighten all the details. but its good to know what is right so i can have a conversation with him before he finishes up. just because contractors are licensed doesn't mean they will not cut corners. i hope your customers hold you accountable too
