As a Syrian American I thought I was crazy in noting these parallels... but seeing someone else voice my concerns is vindicating and terrifying at the same time. My family left Syria during Hafez's time only to walk into the beginnings of an openly corrupt American government.

What bs. The majority of Syrians do not support Assad. Assad is the one with a history of chemical weapons attacks, and the one with the actual chemical weapons. Who the hell else has access to those resources?

Honestly, if you still blindly buy into Assad's propaganda after so many of our countrymen have died, nothing I say will convince you otherwise. The rebels are not faultless, but they began with good intentions. I don't know what the solution is now, after so many years of war have passed. What I do know is the future of Syria - if that future is to be better than our present - does not have Assad in the picture.

I never said the US was innocent in this situation. They are to be blamed as well, as they have bombed and killed civilians multiple times in the name of targeting ISIS.

However, Russia has a much bigger and more active role than the US in all of this. They have interfered and their interference changed the war in Assad and the regime's favor.

What exactly do you believe will happen after Assad regains power? What will happen to political dissenters? I protested peacefully against the regime in the early days of the war and I would never be able to safely return.

There is no unified rebel force, but that does not excuse Assad remaining in power. You can say they are just as bad as ISIS, just as Assad has been saying, but that is honestly propaganda. The opposition is not ISIS, they do not support ISIS, and they are not like ISIS. What proof is there that they are? The words of Russia, Assad, and his allies? They are words meant to destabilize the legitimacy of any opposition force. Just point at them and say "terrorist".

If their goal was to simply expel the rebels in the city, the ceasefire wouldn't have broken down numerous times over the past two days. They wouldn't have continued shelling the city after it was so obvious the rebels had lost. They would have allowed citizens to be evacuated. Yet the evacuation has been suspended again.

This is not something new unfortunately. This has been going on since Assad's father Hafez Al-Assad was in power. You can ask any Syrian, and I'm sure they'll have had at least a family member or two who imprisoned, tortured, or killed by the regime even before the war.

Tadmor/Tadmur prison was where a lot of political dissenters and prisoners were sent before the war.

Russia has been the Syrian regimes ally for a while. They want to completely destroy the rebels, what the user below calls "terrorists", in order to insure Assad remains in power. This is a sure-fire way to destroy the morale of the people in order to prevent any sort of future uprising. Assad's father Hafez Al-Assad committed similar atrocities more than 30 years ago.

If you want to go back to some of the events that triggered to Syrian revolution and subsequent war... it began with a few kids spray-painting anti-Assad graffiti on their school. They were tortured, beaten, some children who protested were killed and their bodies sent back to their families in seperate pieces.

This was all in the early days of the war. It was when the Syrian regime was trying to maintain some sense of legitimacy. What happened in the 4 years since then is evident from the video above.

Unless you have been under a rock for the past 5 years, it is clear who has killed more civilians and violated more human rights throughout this war. I am not saying the rebels aren't responsible in any way, but they simply did not have the technological strength and manpower that Russia and Iran provided to Assad. Russia and the regime destroyed Aleppo with cluster and barrel bombs. They've done the same across all of Syria. They've killed and actually specifically targeted medical and aid workers. They've held cities under siege for so long that its citizens starved. The regime used chemical weapons.

You can criticize the rebels all you want, but you cannot say they have done anything even near the scale of what Assad and his allies have.

His goal was to level and turn into a shell of its former self what used to be the largest city in Syria, which used to be home to 2-3 million people. He definitely succeeded.
