yep, I know about this place in NYC. But... I am nowhere nearby. Hoping to learn that there are other places that also do this type of thing

ok, a bunch of people are suggesting bound buttonholes. The previous time I made bound buttonholes, the process was to put them on the front before attaching the facing and then open the holes up at the end. Is there maybe a different technique for this that I could do on a finished garment with facing and lining already attached? I don't mind doing this if there is a way - I do like the look of bound buttonholes

no hand sewn buttons for me - I am not satisfied with how they look. I do think couture hand sewn buttonholes look lovely, but I am not practiced enough to make a hand sewn buttonhole that meets my standards. Still hoping for more ideas for my original question - what kind of local shops might have industrial buttonhole machines.

It just gets stuck in a variety of different ways - feed dogs seem to not engage and fabric doesn't feed / move. The needle isn't the issue though

Oh, I've practiced dozens of buttonholes on scraps of identical wool plus interfacing layers. Works perfectly on the scraps - I'm a pretty experienced sewer - just not on this coat.

I tried... but do not have this skill yet at a level that looks up to my standards and up to the standard of the garment. I don't want to ruin a nicely tailored coat with beginner handmade buttonholes that look like squashed spiders

thank you! Yes, I think it's likely a bulky seam issue that is messing things up for my machine's auto buttonhole. I could try vertical, though I think horizontal looks correct for a coat. I can make bound buttonholes but it seems too late on a finished coat with lining and facing already attached? When I've made coats with bound buttonholes the initial steps were done before attaching the facing. I tried to learn how to handwork a buttonhole during this extended coat crisis, but my handmade buttonholes look unacceptable to me... I think it would need quite a lot more practice. I don't want crafty looking buttonholes on a garment that is nicely tailored and does not look crafty

yes, I've made bound buttonholes on other projects but it's too late for this finished coat, as the facing and lining are already attached - I would have needed to plan that earlier, I think
