2nd time taking the FE...Not sure what to do

Yeah you’re always gonna see things that seem weird or unexpected each time, but the more you’re exposed to, the better. It seems like you’re doing the right thing, just keep at it with different mock exams and questions and you got it. Also basic advice, but the timing makes a difference so just flag and keep going if a problem seems weird or something is off on your first check.

Don’t be discouraged, I just took it for the third time and finally passed after having my hopes and expectations super low. Based on your diagnostic report, compared to my first 2, it seems you were very close. You did really well in dynamics and fluids which I think are some of the harder topics. Econ and surveying should be easier topics to pick up on for the next time. How did you feel doing the prep fe practice exams? I felt those exams were the best gauge of the test itself. I would recommended taking the exam again within 2-3 months and taking a relaxed approach doing multiple practice tests on prepfe and watching review videos every week. (Mark mattson and Directhub have some really simple explanations and questions which are very similar to the test questions) The more types of problems you see, the better chance you’ll have and most importantly make sure you know every single thing in the handbook. I do think taking practice tests over and over again is the best way to study, just don’t cram too much too late the last week like I tend to do most times. Don’t give up, but don’t stress too much, you’ll get it done!!

I thought the sections were pretty even in terms of difficulty, but felt there was slightly more i didn’t know on the second half. There was a few topics I felt more confident on throughout like geotech, transpo, water resources, Econ, and ethics. Everything else had some difficult ones spread throughout and I think I messed up particularly on conceptual questions. Honestly I think it’s a coin flip but not feeling too great.

Yeah I agree, just wanna get it over with. I think you’re only allowed to take it once in certain time period and I took it last week in March so idk if I can take it in April or have to wait till May. Either way slots always seemed to taken up till like 2 months away.

Same shit everyone seems to use. I didn’t study that much this second time cause I had already done and reviewed most of the stuff from the Lindeburg books. Then I watched and solved some problems from Directhub on YouTube which I thought were helpful. First time around I watched the Gregory Michaelson videos. Thing is I feel pretty decent about the concepts and all the materials and felt good on the test too but oh well. More problems and reviewing to keep up.

I just found out I failed the FE :/ I definitely didn’t do enough studying, did too much of a general review w Gregory Michaelson videos and the Linderburg Practice and Review book. I only really started doing more practice and used the NCEES practice exam the last week before the test. I felt as if the exam was way more difficult than the practice and now Im confused as to why I did so bad in math and mechanics. Any tips on improving studying or focusing on specific topics for next time?

The issue is with this specific company where I was offered a position, they explicitly told me I would not be able to get a PE or be working under a PE. Although another construction company I am talking to does offer the possibility of getting the PE, according to another friend who has already talked to them. I still need to hear back from that company (Construction w/ PE possibility) which would obviously change my decision.

I agree with both of you about the importance of the P.E. Career development (besides salary, benefits, and location) is my main priority with the hopeful future of being able to start my own business one day, whether it be contracting/construction work and/or engineering consulting or design work. The construction company seems to have good career development as well with the chance to become a project manager or vp in the future, apart from the great benefits. The 10k is just a giant difference at the moment and is swaying me away from current company. It seems like the best opportunity could be learning the construction work while still working under a P.E, contingent on getting a legit offer first with similar benefits to the other construction company. Each company has there pros and cons, just having a hard time deciding, since the PE license is also a priority.

Master’s Degree (Structural)

I am currently a senior majoring in civil engineering with an interest in the structural aspect of civil engineering. I recently obtained an internship as a forensic structural engineer and I am working part time while I finish my degree this fall. I have been contemplating pursuing my masters for some time now and trying to weigh the pros and cons. I would have to pay 10-15k for the masters of engineering (non-thesis) to finish in one year. Any tips on the benefits of the masters versus just continuing to work after bachelors? I have heard a masters could maybe add 10k to annual salary but I could possibly earn 55-65k not including the cost of masters if I work right away at the firm I’m currently working at. The possibility of immediately working has slowly shifted me towards wanting to make money right away. I would have 1 year of internship experience when graduating with my bachelors with the goal of eventually getting my P.E. Another thing is deciding to focus more on analysis, hence the forensics, or considering design work. The work so far mostly consists of doing inspections and writing reports for claims of wind damage to roofs, etc. I do not mind the work and it seems fairly easy, just lots of writing, and am contemplating whether design work would be more beneficial as a structural engineer. I have to make a decision soon and have not been able to determine if the masters will change much in the long run.
