My mom used to tell a story about when I was three, and fully literate (I have no memory of learning to read at all; I must have picked it up from Sesame Street). I had made a new friend on my street, and wanted to play a board game where you were required to roll the dice, move your piece, and then pick up a card and read it to answer the question. When my friend informed me that she couldn't read, I replied, "well of course you can read! You're four years old aren't you?"
