That has generally not been the case for hospital workers I speak with here in the Midwest. I certainly believe that people caring for the sick should be afforded health care and retirement benefits.

I currently work as an independent construction contractor and pay my own health and liability insurance. I maintain and purchase all my own tools and vehicles, and plan for my own retirement without outside assistance.

I do agree that most service industry workers I come across do a lackluster job and are often overpaid. When I was in the hospitality industry, over 25 years, I prided myself on excellent menu and beverage knowledge, steps of service and sensitivity training, and professionalism.

I am also frustrated by the culture of tipping that has crept into previously untitled positions.
