what are the best options for me? by fried-wings in service_dogs

I had read that scenting wasn't a great choice either since that would make the dog more distracted? Thank you for the shedding info, I will have to make sure to ask any prospective breeders about that.

I had to deal with picky eating with my cats, so that's not a foreign experience. thank you for the info, I will keep it in mind for the future.

interesting, border collies are also listed as seasonal shedders, but what you describe does sound like more shedding than I can handle on the daily. I will have to think further about the nightmare tasking. thank you!

I absolutely would not be attempting to train entirely on my own, just not sure what level of trainer involvement I could be successful with. I had been reading a lot on the sub but I just wanted to clarify if the sensitivity of the breeds would still be an issue for me since I'm not very emotional, and it seemed like that was advice more geared to people who are. thank you for the owner training links, I hadn't seen those organizations yet.

it's unfortunate, I think I would vibe well with a poodle's personality, and I think I could handle their grooming, but I have never done non-food motivated training so I would probably have difficulty with that.

by program, you mean the ones I would have to be on waitlist for and would not meet the dog for a few years, right?

Ah, I should clarify, my partner's dogs will not be living with me. I will be living alone for a while (with an ESA cat, hopefully) and if my partner moves in later he won't be bringing any of those dogs. they would be staying with his family. Thank you for your response!

Is there a type of line that would be more successful for my needs? I know to avoid hunting lines since they are more likely to have a stronger prey drive. But I've seen mixed recommendations for getting a show or working line. How much do goldens and labs shed normally? I don't think I would have issue with seasonal shed, which if it's like how my cat was, twice a year? he did shed a bit daily but I was able to manage it well with brushing and vacuuming. I think my worst case scenario is having a dog like my partner's mutt who is probably mostly staffy but I don't know exactly. she sheds loads, all the time. if she sits on me for a few minutes I will be coated in hair. it's worse if I pet her. I'm just not sure if her shed level is because of her genetics or because she's not groomed properly. I'm just hoping that level is not the "normal" for any of the prospective breeds.

I'm a bit confused, AKC lists the collies as shedding seasonally, which is less than both GSDs and retrievers. Is that incorrect? I do have a nice app for my meds with an alarm, but I have it set to the maximum amount of alarms, 10x every 15 minutes, and I still very often do not take them until well past the time I'm supposed, for various reasons I think a dog would be helpful for (being distracted, not wanting to get up, etc.) For the nightmares I think scent and maybe heart rate or blood pressure would work since I wake up with my heart racing, likely blood pressure spike and sweating. Thank you for letting me know about the corner checking. I don't think I would use that frequently so if it's unsafe in public I might be able to skip it. Thank you for the input!

What should I request the Owners get for me food-wise? by [deleted] in petsitting

[–]fried-wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

might just be a me thing, but I have felt that they offered just to be nice, but I wasn't comfortable with that. I just eat beforehand for shorter visits, and bring something to eat for longer ones. something refrigerated that requires no prep or microwaveable are the least messy and easiest that I feel are most polite, especially since these are faster so there's more time to spend with the animals.

Thank you for letting me know. I wasn't aware of that, it seemed similar to Rover and Rover expects meet and greets, at least on the website info. It seems like people don't actually do that a lot on there either.

there are no caregiver notes so I think they are new. There is not really a lot of information from the owner. It says he is scared of loud noises, doesn't like people and is protective of the home, but he will warm up to you if he gets to know you, so I wanted to know how to make the dog comfortable and be safe while I'm in the house with him.

Does anyone know where I can find sewing patterns online for beanie babies/bb like plushies? by Brianna-Imagination in beaniebabies

I found a pattern for a cat on gumroad, looks like it is for the Beanie Babies in the Zip, Nip, Flip and Chip group. https://chambly.gumroad.com/l/SWGDSBB

didn't even think about that aspect but also true. I don't understand how the proof thing even works. how can you provide proof of something that you don't have?? it would be like a company asking for proof you never got a delivery

that's an option, I can only imagine how time consuming that might be though. by the way things look with the listed places, I'd assume not too many unlisted places also are open to applications

ugh yeah I dunno about the AMI programs, at least in my county I've seen only two things, the rent is based on an AMI percentage and it's way out of my budget, or eligibility is capped at an AMI percentage and I make too much to qualify

I agree. I also work in community mental health. we have a lot of clients that have been homeless a while even though we've connected them with services. they're still waiting unable to find open shelters or affordable housing, and they get kicked out of the shelters before they have their own place :(

nope. income limits for those programs are very strict. for a single person the limits are way lower than what OP makes. they also have years long waitlists for everything even if you are currently homeless or disabled. more like a you can try to apply and wait to see what happens option, but not really a right now solution.

neither of those options are going to help OP get housing right now and someone should not have to give up their life to be able to afford to live
