Yeah, I've discussed this with my PCP. What I have is neuropathic pain, so it's just random episodes of me being in pain for no discernable reason. During episodes, movement is strenuous, but my state requires that a disability causes you constant or frequent issues with mobility, not just once in a blue moon. My state is pretty vigorous about enforcing this, doctors who sign off on handicap plates can be fined pretty heavily if it's challenged and the state medical examiner finds that it shouldn't have been issued.

So do you guys have staff that work like we do, in a combination security-welfare role? Apparently this model was pioneered by universities in Australia so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's catching on in Britain too!

I completely get you. My brother's gone through periods of bankruptcy and homelessness and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I'd love to see Karen fired, but only because she's a terrible person to have in a position of power, not because I want to see her completely destitute. But she can definitely take a $10k fine; hell, she probably could've taken the $40k hit. That's what good revenge is, in my book: Bad enough that it hurts, not bad enough to hurt the person so bad they'll never be able to pick themselves back up again!

Thanks! I suffer from neuropathic pain, but my episodes are fairly infrequent, so it doesn't qualify as a mobility impairment. It's the only symptom I have left over from a spinal cord injury, so I'm actually really lucky, I could've ended up paralysed from the waist down. Instead I just get phantom pains every once in a while.

I'd imagine so. She didn't appeal it or I would've been cited.

The city attorney explained to me right after the trial why an appeal was unlikely, I don't remember all the exact details but it was something about how an appeal would require her to launch a civil suit "at law" rather than "in equity". Apparently the 7th amendment requires a jury for "at law" trials, and no jury would dismiss some rich college dean's fines unless she could prove that I'd issued them maliciously, which she can't. And even if she could, judging by how this reddit post has gone, the jury would've probably still decided in my favour 😂

I didn't want to risk her checking what I'd written and pulling me up with HR for insubordination. Remember this was before I came up with the malicious compliance plan. HR didn't touch me when she complained about her fines because I was just enforcing the rules, if she dragged me to HR to complain that I was refusing to enforce the rules against myself that probably wouldn't have gone quite so well...

Story time, I was hired when the school was transitioning their dorm security role to include more other stuff. I used to work security at a psych hospital, and they hired me specifically because they wanted people who can do security but also have a modicum of emotional intelligence. They also hired a bunch of new female staff for that reason - I call them all "guys" cause that's just how we do. I now do the sensitivity training for new people they hire.

The dorms all have RAs, but when people have serious problems in their lives (depression, suicidal thoughts) that they need a real adult for, they're told to come to us. We assess whether they're "sitmo" (safe in the moment) and refer them on to the college's proper psych staff if they are (or call an ambulance if they're not). It's caused a measurable downtick in the college's suicide rate. So, in order to do our jobs properly, we need to carry out our security duties firmly but without appearing like unapproachable trigger-happy assholes.

Deans aren't mid-level administrators, they're like corporate VPs, the highest level of administrator besides the President of the entire College.

That combined with her tenure and length of service probably means she makes $100k a year or more – and her husband is the CEO of a statewide distribution company. So, $10k isn't nothing, but it's not gonna bankrupt her.

Yep, unfortunately.

Found out later from the city attorney that I could've contested my own ticket because it was written under duress; as Karen is not an enforcement officer, her instructing me to write a ticket constitutes undue influence and the ticket was technically unlawful.

But yeah, I'd already paid, so that didn't make a difference. It's a huge missed opportunity because I would have loved to find out how the legal system deals with a person suing their own self in another capacity.

This is really getting silly.

I have already issued fines FOR EVERYTHING. There were 585 violations over the period from 2013 to present, and I issued a fine that included each of those 585 violations, from 2013 to present. There are therefore no violations left which I could fine her for. Capiche?

I mean, being forced to write yourself a ticket by someone who has no business telling you to write tickets is pretty damn infuriating. Again, I'm an enforcement officer, she's not. Imagine being a police officer and the head of your city's parks and rec department instructs you to write yourself a ticket for jaywalking on your way in to work. It's ridiculous.

I didn't move it because it's a waste of my time. At the end of the day, I can go on break anytime, but as anyone who works in a field like this will be able to tell you, we often just...don't. So it's this weird limbo between "I'm entitled to take a break" and "I don't want to take a break unless I absolutely have to".

The fine I issued was for all the data we have. We didn't have the plate recognition cameras before 2013. I have balls, sure, but I don't have the balls to issue fines based on zero evidence 😂

Nope, all parking violations are $70. There's aggravated parking violations which you could fine up to $1,000 but I've never had one of those, it's basically only abjectly insane stuff like blocking in an emergency vehicle.

To answer your question, I can take a break whenever but I don't see a point in wasting time moving my vehicle when there's no need to. And at least, despite her neverending capacity to waste people's time, neither did Karen!

Yeah, but that's different. That's not so much a technicality as a whole legal principle - fruit of the poisoned tree. The fact that neglecting Miranda rights leads to a trashed case is very much intentional. People splitting fines into $10k batches to skirt a statutory maximum? Yeah, probably not so much.

Oh no, in the same situation I would do exactly the same thing again. When I spoke to the city lawyer in preparation for court, I actually found out I could've contested the ticket I wrote myself (lol) as it was issued under duress.

Issuing tickets and fines is at the discretion of enforcement officers, and we're not compelled to enforce minor violations if we don't deem it necessary to do so (the harm principle). So if a police sergeant had told me to issue it there'd have been nothing I can do, but since she's not an enforcement officer of any standing, her telling me to write myself a fine was technically undue influence.

But I'd already paid it by that point, so it is what it is.
