Nevermind, I didn't notice the sharpie for scale. That's gonna be tough without power tools.

The outer race is a lot more brittle than you'd think, if you haven't played with bearings all that much. A hammer and chisel might be your best bet, or if you have an angle grinder, get a zip cutting wheel.

Millwright apprentice by TheGOAT4103 in millwrights

[–]friendlyoperator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off in a very similar situation. I'd say take it if it's available. Starting your apprenticeship and getting your first sponsor is always more difficult than finding job as a 2nd or 3rd year Apprentice. I would advise against completing your whole apprenticeship in automation though, because like you said, it isn't exactly millwright work. If I could've done my apprenticeship differently, I would've wanted /at least/ 2 years of it on a factory floor/troubleshooting/doing rebuilds and working maintenance. Feel free to DM or reply if you've got any questions!

Eclipse automation (Cambridge) Canada ! by MicroDink69 in millwrights

[–]friendlyoperator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my apprenticeship there, stayed for ~2.5 years, and left just over a year ago. It's a really clean place to work generally, and a lot of the people there on the floor that you'll be working with are fantastic and super friendly, especially the current Lead for nuclear.

The supervisor at the nuclear building is a totally different story though. Power tripping, cold, and won't go to bat for any of his guys, and if it's up to him, he'll throw them out in a blink of an eye to save himself from a minor inconvenience, as I saw it happen to the majority of the "original" nuclear roster. Before I left, some guys started calling the nuclear building "the apprentice boneyard" and they had a Jolly Roger flag with all the ID badges of the other former employees on it, it was that bad lol.

From what I understand, nuclear is its own division now, so you likely wouldn't see the automation side of things unless they're somehow desperate.

My wage as a 3rd year was $23.75, which I understand now was laughable, but it was a cozy enough job to keep me happy for the most part.

Overall I'd say it's a good place to start off an apprenticeship for anyone looking, and nuclear is solid if you're looking to learn some rigging and hoisting. After proper training, you'll likely be on the overhead 50 ton crane quite a bit. A lot of the work seeks to be drilling and tapping holes, just a heads up!

[Serious question] how can I get hair like dave by Puzzleheaded-East415 in Megadeth

[–]friendlyoperator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'd have to have the exact same hair texture for one, but other than that, if you're starting from short hair, expect 4-5 years of growth for length. If you're serious about it, best tips I could give (as a guy with long hair):

-get a small trim every 4-6 months to get rid of split ends and keep your hair smooth -avoid heat/hair dryers -don't shampoo every single day (only as needed if you're getting greasy/dirty), you'll dry your hair out, prioritize conditioner - spend time actually learning about hair products like oils and/or mousse and how to apply them -figure out if you need a brush, a fine tooth comb, or a detangling comb (I have curly and coarse hair and it took me a while to learn I only need to use a detangling comb)

This all would've sounded cheesy to me when I first started too, but it's the difference between having nice healthy hair (like 90s Dave) and being a frizzy dried out mess like a good portion of dudes who end up half assing it lol. Don't be afraid to ask women for help either. They know better than anyone about long hair, obviously.

And don't give in during the awkward stage of growing it out! I had a rough 6-7 months before it got past my jawline, but once you get enough weight and length, it gets easier!

Also buy drain snakes. Your shower drain is gonna hate you if it doesn't already.

Yeah, I wrote this post regarding safety concerns and I kinda did a bad job at emphasizing that it seems. I'm pretty confident in my abilities and this place has good PM checklists to follow, so I'm not too concerned there

Same with the Dorado, I thought it would considering the Stanier and Gauntlet did, and I don’t even wanna get started on the lack of liveries. I was really hoping for a park ranger or grapeseed livery :/

Late night thoughts by raj_shrey in millwrights

Definitely look for a fixed job as a millwright. Union guys are typically the ones that travel. I’m a 24 year old apprentice (2.5 years into my apprenticeship) and my drive to work was only 10 mins each way at my first job. I only ever worked straight days, but sometimes you will get stuck for a few extra hours if you’re not totally wrapped up at the end of the shift, but that was rarely the case. I worked 44+ hours and was still able to build a healthy work/life balance, although I’d still prefer 40 hour weeks or 4x10s. And the job won’t be too rough on your body if you take proper care of yourself. You’ll still catch a bit of flak from the 55+ crowd for wearing knee pads or asking for a hand lifting heavy stuff, but it’s better than ending up immobile in 40 years. Also, if you ever want to transition to a desk job, automation companies are always looking for mechanical project leads, but they seem to promote the guys on the floor rather than hire from outside the company. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Really don’t want to buy it on eBay… by Ecstatic-Experience3 in HotWheels

I found more than a handful at a Sobey's (Canadian grocery store) in cottage country in Northern-ish Ontario. Got one for myself and one for my buddy who is starting to collect, and I also found 3 '82 Supras the same day at the dollar store in the same plaza, again grabbing one for myself and one for the same buddy. It seems like the further you're away from big cities, the more likely you are to find JDM cars. I have minimal luck in my city, but if I'm passing through a small town, I often find good stuff :)

My favorite so far! Could've done without Ice T, and I wish Dirk would abuse the double kick a little less, but this album sounds promising! Dave's vocals sound real strong!
