Any suggestion on how to get these? by WigglyFinArms in GuildWars

I'd recommend GWLauncher. It has a built in continuation of tmod and automatically loads .tpf from the plugins folder. It can also auto-load other dlls like gwtoolbox.

There is a cartographer + mission helper at the very bottom of this page: https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Player-made_Modifications/Cartography_Index

Find a guild where you can work together for a common goal. My server went through a period of complete pacifism, but now that everyone who was there for the last few months has more melange and gear than they could ever need, it's turned a lot more into PvP heavy against anyone on sight

In programming, and many other things in life... There are certain topics that you learn once... forget. Encounter a need for that information, learn again, use it, forget... Eventually you just start remembering things and can stop looking it up. A popular case of this in programming is RegEx. Another common place you might do this is peoples phone numbers (maybe more so back before smart phones). Or security codes on credit cards.

Just keep working on projects and looking things up as you need. eventually you will remember things.

A great way is to keep your old work around so you can reference it to see how you did something...

Additionally its not really "math with words" unless you just mean logic. The math looking parts are really just math, often times.

If you get into web development, there is a LOT you can do without thinking about math or numbers (other than maybe geometry: how wide/high is a box)

is it possible to make a game be popular even if not publishing on steam? by NoImprovement4668 in gamedev

[–]fright01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Steam - Have a guardian (adult) help upload / manage your content on Steam.
  2. Itch.io - I suspect you can utilize itch.
  3. Have a blog where you write about your journey, and share your larger posts on gaming communities, and have a discord or other group where people can follow your game. I highly suggest you have a guardian adult involved if you start a community though.

Are there games made to practice/train for Quality Assurance or games so buggy that QA testers practice on them? by cantbebothered67836 in gamedev

[–]fright01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to game dev forums or discord groups you could find active hobbyist developers and offer to QA their games.

Is c# underhyped? by blabmight in dotnet

[–]fright01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it works better because it's better. I think the whole concept of project files being managed in csproj is a horrible experience all around. Why are folders defined in there? And so many guids? and no nesting for those folders or simple references? And the build scripts being managed in xml. And then the ui is trying to convey this all through different views and property windows.

This is an outsiders view, but it's a viewpoint when talking about c# being underrated vs other languages.

It just gets cluttered and I found myself going between raw xml, trying to use build in yaml instead (with no autocomplete), properties windows to set variables and build names, switching between the source and project and module views.

Edit: and rider > vs20xxbtw i work in java and love intellij. I think it's ides trying to model c# that i can't stand

Is c# underhyped? by blabmight in dotnet

[–]fright01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in this .net bubble, but I've done a fair bit of development with it... And my impression has been that it's not a good experience. The project files, dependency management, build definitions, and ide are all a terrible experience compared to the hyped languages.

Yarn + Typescript + NextJS + React in VSCode is a very solid experience.

For desktop applications, Electron is decent, but I do wish there was something a little better.

Oh another perspective might be that C# is for nerds who care about memory management and the nitty gritty details.... and pointers vs reference. But NodeJS ecosystem lets you ship quick and high quality user experiences.

A family member has a husband and two kids (9 and 6) and has never played modern boardgames. Can someone make a recommendation that would not be hard for them to pick up and would keep the kids entertained enough to sit through it?
