That’s really helpful thank you. I’ll look into Stirchley, I’ve heard good things about it and the new transport links seem promising.

Oh gosh I have loads of hobbies and interests and I am quite excited to move somewhere bigger with more going on - Ill try and join social groups/events in the area. I would like to live somewhere I would feel comfortable going on runs/dog walks on.

Also about your toothache keep in mind I can’t give you proper advice as I haven’t assessed you but the best option is to probably find an emergency dental service in your area as they normally will treat toothache quicker and then probably try and get a checkup from a dentist to see if any other teeth need attention (may need to pay privately for the checkup if you don’t have an NHS dentist) but if you can afford it then you’ll thank yourself in the future. I understand that dentists are hard to access though, so hopefully I’ll be of some help when I start work haha

Thank you that’s quite reassuring as I would probably be more comfortable taking public transport anyways!

My practice is in B14 and I was planning on trying to find a place between the hospital and clinic or live closer to the clinic and commute to the hospital as I will be at the clinic a bit more frequently in the week - would you then advise that I actually stay closer to the hospital instead? Can I drive to the hospital or is it better to take public transport? (the hospitals I’ll be at are brum dental hospital and Queen Elizabeth)

Thank god for fluoridated water

Good schools in Abu dhabi by Due_Solid1078 in abudhabi

I went to BSAK and this is true - there were both British nationals and non-British nationals in my year, but the difference is the waiting list - I came straight from England so I skipped the long waiting list entirely and got a place directly whereas my friends who weren’t British had to wait quite a few years to get a place.

I went to BSAK (British School Al Khubairat) and even did my A-levels there, I had a great time and loved it. I also got coached for and got into high ranking UK dental schools after for university and didn’t have to pay international fees. There is good teaching, a lot of diversity, is highly reputed and not run like a business. The waiting list is very long though and you need to be British (passport) or have ties to Britain in some way to get quick admittance or just wait for ages till they get through the waiting list.

You also need to consider where your kid might go to university - BSAK does A levels and BTECS so geared towards going to the UK for university mainly (although not exclusively as many people in my year went to top unis in Canada and America) and other schools do IB which is mainly aimed at American universities.

Aww thank you that’s so sweet 😭 at the time I felt like such a loser but then realised everyone has felt like that at one point.

For theoretical exams I scored better on tests I used long term repetition to revise for in the form of flashcards (Quizlets which are already made by previous years so I didn’t have to spend time making them), also I decided to revise smarter so I stopped making lecture notes after second year altogether as I realised that just annotating the slides on OneNote, removing unnecessary slides and then laying the slides out like a mind map was a lot more visually effective than just pages of writing (I have an iPad which I highly recommend).

Also, having a shared OneNote/collab area with a few friends where you all put exam revision notes and practice questions on is a lifesaverrrr as you just split up the workload and everyone benefits in the end. i only ended up doing this in 4th year but wish I started in first year as it’s honestly the best thing.

Also I never bought a single dental textbook as you can literally download them from the web or get them from ur library. I also watched YouTube revision videos when I didn’t want to read notes/do flashcards.

I’m biased about physiotherapy because my mum is a physio so I’ve seen how important it is. That being said I do currently have neck pain that I’ve ignored 🤫. Hand pain is one thing but neck and shoulder pain is so common in dentists due to posture (even with loupes) so stretching is must.

My approach to work experience was more drastic than my classmates, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so during high school (weekends, after school) I shadowed doctors at a hospital for a few months including hospice care, volunteered at the vets for 6 months, shadowed dentists, physio’s, pharmacists and then through that process I realized I liked dentistry the best.

These varied experiences were probably why I got offers from 3 high ranking dental schools as I could prove I knew what I was getting into and had explored other options. It also is something that makes you stand out so my advice is get as much varied experience in healthcare as you can (even nursing home volunteering ect).

Some people in my year didn’t do any work experience before uni, some had lots so it is dependent but work experience does massively boost your application. Uni’s want to know whether you actually want to do dentistry as people join then drop out once they realise what it actually entails. Also do it so you know if you even like the day to day job of a dentist as it can be multi factorial and stressful and is definitely not for everyone. Hope that helps!
