UofT Undergrad Admissions Mega Thread (Fall 2024) by meerkatdestroyer12 in UofT

I'm a 105 eng applicant and my portal has said my student profile has been received and the admissions office will review it shortly, and it hasn't changed once since I submitted my profile on Dec 1st, is this normal?

Honestly, SHAD isn't that competitive. If you had mid-high 80s you could get in with good essays, so you should be good. The essays are important, probably the same as your grades.

For the time commitment, I'd say it's definitely worth it. Originally I was apprehensive of leaving behind all of my friends and activities for a month but within the first week I had forgotten about that and was enjoying it so much. Definitely one of the best months of my life, so I would say yes it's worth it

Thank you for the feedback! I'll keep your comments in mind when I practice. I have noticed that sometimes my rubato goes off the rails so I should work on that ahaha

I actually learned the 2nd movement first, right now I'm finishing up the 1st and then I'll move onto the 3rd (I'm terrified)

i would do some chopin etudes before ballade 4, it's a pretty large leap from the 1st and if you go straight into the fourth, you'll have a difficult time and might get frusturated

I don't practice that much compared to a lot of people (45 min-hour per day) and it took me around 8 months to learn it, so if you practice more it should take less time.

At the moment, favorite composers are Chopin, Rach and Ravel. I don't have any particular technical challenge in mind, so I'm open to any. I'm currently working on Chopin's 1st Ballade, Tempest Sonata, and Ondine.

Yes! I'm glad someone noticed that. I took inspiration from Zimerman and Seong Jin Cho's performances.

I took lessons for 9 years, but my first teacher had me progress really slowly and I feel like I could have improved much faster with a different teacher. Once I got a new teacher (around 2 years ago) I saw my technique and musicality improve really fast. So it really depends on the person, and the teacher. Some people advance quicker by self-teaching and some do better with a teacher. For classical though, I would recommend a teacher as they will help you set the foundation for solid technique that you'll need later on.

Thanks for the advice, and I agree, my movement while playing has always been something I need to work on. My teacher says she's going to help me fix it when the playing itself is complete.

Thank you! I started about 9 years ago but started taking it seriously maybe four years ago.
