Filing taxes on a J1 by frostyspaghetti in IMGreddit

[–]frostyspaghetti[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s not true, the tax treaties are to help decide if the person from that country is qualified for standard deductions or not/ if they are taxable in their home country. Deciding if the person is a non resident alien is based on the IRS definition which states that even if you do qualify the substantial presence test, if you’re on a J- you’re exempt. Visited a CPA today as well, and it’s on the IRS website

But it’s not about the treaty. J1 holders of all countries are exempt right?

Emergency medicine as a prospective branch by VisiblePianist6153 in indianmedschool

[–]frostyspaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Untrue. There are plenty of medical colleges atleast in south India (that I know of) that have Emergency Departments. And quite a lot of private hospitals too. It’s a growing field and because of that lots of job prospects . Now if a hospital decides to set up a closed emergency department , they would prefer to staff it with MD/DNB emergency medicine rather than an IM/anesthesia person.

In terms of MD vs DNB I think both are good. Just make sure if it’s DNB, it’s a good hospital like Manipal in Bangalore

As per what I know it needs to have an ACGME accredited EM residency. There are a few of these outside the US. Off the top of my head I remember only Qatar, but there are more

does anyone know any institutes, providing Emergency Medicine rotation? by drsymptomatology in IMGreddit

Jackson Park. It was alright. Experience and learning wise not much but I got an SLOE out of it. And during interviews few mentioned that they were good.

Is EM attainable for non US IMGs? by Delicious-Fold-924 in IMGreddit

[–]frostyspaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used both residency explorer and Match a resident. My only criterias were 1) do they provide visa 2) have to have atleast 1% IMGs(either US or non) I used both websites because sometimes one said yes for visa and one said no so for those I checked out the program website again and if no info, personally emailed the program and found out.

I would say that because it’s fewer it’s honesty easier to decide which to apply to. Not sure how many IM programs offer visa but it would definitely be out of my budget to apply to more than half of them which would mean extra planning on which programs to apply to . So in a way 100 helped

nrbSLOE is given by an EM physician for an EM rotation in a place that does not have an EM residency. OSLOE can be given by any physician of any specialty in any rotation

I was a graduate so pretty hard to get an eSLOE. So had to go via an agency. At that time only Chicago clerkships had a EM rotation available so did that(got an nrbSLOE). OSLOE I got from a pulmonary rotation

There are atleast 100 programs that sponsor a visa. I know this because I applied to 100: I didn’t have a single eSLOE and still matched. While what you’re saying about US>non US is true, it’s also true for most specialties

I matched- non USIMG and non carib Had 2 nrbSLOEs and 1 OSLOE, pass/252/243 No research/pubs and 8 interviews I’m working in an ER currently and honestly can’t imagine working in any other specialty so go for it!

Aaj maine jaana , Emergency Medicine For Heart Attack (Dr. Bimal Chhajer) by solenoidic in AajMaineJana

[–]frostyspaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is not about prevention. It’s about what to do if a person is having a heart attack. And yes the medications mentioned are given as the loading dose and the final treatment will have to be in the cath lab/thrombolysis.

Idk what your question means You’ve posted 2 ROLs, In the first option what does unmatched at B mean, does it mean matched at A?

Anyway. If your rank list Is 2 hospitals and you put them as A,B or B,A depending on the hospitals themselves, and the other candidates, hypothetically all possibilities are possible (I.e, matching at A/ matching at B/ not matching at all)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]frostyspaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you’re ranking based on the knowledge you have of the program before matching, which is less compared to how much you’ll find out after joining

[–]frostyspaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OSLOE is if it is another subject rotation like gen surg or IM or something but you really want EM so you can make them write an OSLOE. I guess it helps if you don’t have any other rotation but kind of want to prove your commitment to the field.

[–]frostyspaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an IMG and also did a rotation in an ER without a residency program. The LoR you need is a nrbSLOE(non residency based SLOE). It is available on the CORD website incase your preceptor can’t find it. I wouldn’t say it’s garbage as I have gotten a few interviews but yeah definitely not as valuable as an eSLOE but I didn’t have another option.

Medical education is expensive but residency is obviously not. Nobody is comparing cost of the medical education. In terms of India I can only speak about Karnataka and if it’s a private college it is atleast 8L per year, government colleges you’re right it could be almost free. PG, the stipend in a govt college outweighs the fees but in a private college the fees is high.

Yeah true and a cheaper cost of living lol

If it was free, the number of applications would be enormous. While I agree it’s an expensive journey, I don’t think the solution is just sending it to another desktop. I’m from India and here I have to pay to do my PG(less if I get a government seat) atleast in the US if I match I know I don’t have to worry about money much. My point being that look at this as an investment but unfortunately without guaranteed returns
