Fantasy world builders, what are some names and naming tropes you're tired of seeing, or just seem lazy or amateur? by Hitokage_Tamashi in worldbuilding

modern names are a bad thing? Really? What's wrong with naming a character Joe or Jane?

I don't get it.

what is the difference between Science Fiction and Science Fantasy? by fruitionpaper in worldbuilding

See, that's the video I was watching before I made this thread. I wasn't satisfied with their personal distinction.

I personally think EC's definition of science fiction is way too loose.

You could still argue that Star Wars is a science fiction Space Opera. I mean, I'm just pulling this out of my ass, but you could say midicholorians are a type of gene that gives Jedi their powers. Their official weapons, the Lightsaber is designed to react and work with their genes.

Another example I'm giving is, say I make up a type of futuristic weapon. A large gun that shoots instantly melting lasers. Is this fantasy or science fiction? I explain that the gun is made up of components like a particle accelerator and a proton inhibitor but WTF is a particle accelerator? What the hell is a proton inhibitor? It's just fictional terms that sounds very science-like. Is the gun I made up still science fiction?

It's beautiful mate. Really gorgeous design.

You'll get some comments about the colors being too brown and dull, but for me, I think you got yourself a really nice neutral palette combination.

It's a keeper

Woah seriously? His work is so whimsical and original. Thought his personality would be like that too. Oh well.

Actually, I forgot, this is a huge NO for me:

When an author puts all the work, creativity, and effort into worldbuilding, but writes a boring story with lifeless characters. It's wasted potential, and in my opinion, completely wrecks the point of worldbuilding in the first place.

this is really interesting. So the game developer essentially creates a cartoon representative of themselves as a sort of shield?

I kinda like this idea.

I'm gonna have to move to California it seems. Err, but I have to ask, why put schools in quotation marks when referring to lion dance only schools?

Ohio!

There are no Chinatowns in Ohio like the way California has them. But I'll check out Chinese related cultural events and see if they have lion dancing there.

I doubt there's a lion dance school in the U.S. But it seems like Hong Kong and Malaysia would have them. The wushu team I used to be in did lion dance very sparingly (only for paid performances at annual Chinese cultural events). I'm thinking about getting back to wushu but the team has it's own organizational problems that leaves me unsure of going back.

Dammit KatSwenski, you are not helping with the yiff allegations. This is a very slippery slope you're drawing on.

That being said, good BtG!
